Shoreham Hawker Typhoon Tail Plane

many years ago when looking round the museum prior to the Auction I saw on the wall next to their Typhoon Cockpit an Elevator and a tail plane. The elevator was fairly rough (no skins) but the tail plane was complete with much of the original paint still intact. The tail plane still flak damage in the leading edge, the reason for it being changed. I was going to bid on it at the time but when it reached £600 it was outside what I was going to pay (I had only just started collecting Typhoon items at that stage). I didn’t catch where or who bought it and since then I have been trying to find out where it went, in fact I am still trying to find anyone else who saw it (Roger Marley was going to bid on it aswell).

Does anyone remember the tail plane? it would be fantastic if anyone knew where it went…any pictures?

Cheers
Dave

I don’t know who was buying what that day, it was just a maelstrom of individuals turning up and flailing their hands in the air, most of who I didn’t know of, must admit I lost interest after a while with the prices going silly for things that were not that remarkable. I remember the Napier Sabre selling and the face of the person who bought it, after a bidding battle for it, I didn’t know him but had seen him around the aerojumbles. I just cannot remember the sale of the tail or moving it, I am sure Dr Benamou said in the auction, the tail plane had belonged to him before, but that’s it.

Doesn’t Bob Tricket have a bit of Tiffie control surface?

Hi,
I remember that one, I have a couple myself with skins on. It was definitely a tail plane with flak hole(s) in the leading edge and the original paint.

Might be a red herring, but ….. pictures of a Typhoon elevator appeared on a thread on this forum at about this time last year (March?). Apologies but cannot recall the name of the thread.

not sure if Roger still frequents here but on the day I was standing next to him and I think it went too high for him aswell. I can’t even remember what it went for in the end, I switched off after it had reached my limit. The mystery buyer could well be the man I am after….if you can remember any details then I will try and get in touch with him. Even if he didn’t buy it then if he is a Typhoon/Tempest guy then it is always good to know. It also means I wasn’t going mad over a tail plane existing somewhere….

I think Junk Collector could be right, on reflection.

As he says, Tim may well have a valid excuse if he doesn’t remember it but my only excuse would be faulty memory if I’m wrong….and the more I reflect, the more I think I am!

We did take quite a bit of Typhoon and Tempest stuff, and kind of thought all of it. But maybe not? I’ll ask the third party in the removal team, Dave!

There was another big buyer of stuff at the auction although I don’t think anyone has seen or heard of him since – although Tim may know who he was? If Roger Marley didn’t buy it then the ‘mystery buyer’ could be who you want.

Its one of those times where you wish you had taken a picture, it was early in my interest in Typhoons and just didn’t think that I wouldn’t come across it again. I was wondering if it ever went to Brian Barnes in Coventry as I believe he was at the auction. I have not been able to get in contact with him to find out though.

I don’t remember the tail plane going in the lorry, I remember it at the auction but have no memory of it after that, though that bit of memory may have been surgically removed !

So did any of the structure end up in this http://www.flickr.com/photos/niallist/5577747321/ in the museum at Caen or is this just a replica ?

I am pretty sure it went to Dr Pierre Benamou who was then with the D-Day Museum at Bayeux.

I am fairly sure it was one of the items I delivered to him in France.
