Short 184 repro "any news ?"

Some years ago a chap announced that he was going to try & build a Short 184 repro, I seem to remember that he was in the north Lincolnshire area, but not too sure about that. Does any one know if he started to build, & if so how far has he got with the project ??.

There were some discussions many years ago about the possibility of building a replica 184 and restoring the example now at FAAM but it came to nothing, as I said before there are now no plans to restore this example, and what you see in the photos are all that there is.

BOO SHAME ON YOU FAA “lol”.:diablo:

Hi AVION

I’m not too sure what else is left of the FAA’s 184, I did hear that there were some wing & tail components, as well as the forward fuselage, but don’t know if this is true.
As you said, depending on whats left, a repro might be the best course for the FAA to take, should they decide that they want a complete one on display, & I hope they do, as it would be great to see one.
Still no news on the other one that was supposed to be being built.

There are no plans to rebuild the 184, the Gladiator and Barra are next, if you look in the background of the last photo you will see the ‘fishtank’ as the staff called it that now houses the 184 under construction

Assuming that what is/was on display at the FAAM is the totality of what it has, I hope that it is left and displayed in the condition illustrated in Robbo’s photographs. To “rebuild” that would, in my opinion, be a travesty in that the integrity would be subsumed into what would be, in percentage terms, a replica. If someone wants a replica Short 184, let it be built from scratch. Or if the FAAM should decide to “rebuild” what they have, let the new built elements be demonstrably what they are and obviously different from the original elements.

There were also rumours/announcements for a Handley Page O/100 or O/400 a while back – now that would be something! A Short 184 would be fantastic, a very important WW1 type

The 0/400 is more than a rumour, I’ve seen what they’ve done so far, they could do with some extra hands etc if your up for it.

As for the 184, I have not heard any more since it was first mentioned several years ago. There were rumours a long time ago, that the Fleet Air Arm museum were going to rebuild theirs, but nothing seems to have come of it “lack of funds etc I believe”.

With a span of 63′ they are either still making wing ribs or given up and gone for a pint.
