Short C Class Replica

Have come across a reference in an Aeroplane Monthly of 2011 re. a Short C Class replica being built by the Inverclyde Flying Boat Project at Port Glasgow. From a quick google the project seems to have been started back in 2008 with work on the replica commencing in 2010. A year later the first phase, a 15 foot high section of passenger cabin, was nearing completion ready to be fitted out with seats, furnishings and windows. Does anyone know what has happened since? It all appears to have gone very quiet! It’s the first I have heard of this project and there seems to be very little info about it on the web.

I guess all we can hope is that one day this project will re-surface. Nice pic too, Robert 🙂

Like you I have tried to find out this project without any success. It appears that a Linton Ray Dixon who lived in Kilcreggan View Greenock (now aged about 80) was the main person.
“We at Greenock have established the Flying Boat Project and plan to build a full scale model of the Caledonia. It will be made primarily from wood but will have metal cladding. It could turn out to be perhaps the largest “flat
pack” model kit ever made. Watch this space!!”
I have been watching without any success.
I thought it would be interesting as many years ago a neighbour built a r/c Walrus and i built a free flight Hurricane on floats. (Neither were a success)

It would be really nice to have a Foynes-style museum created round a C-class replica but I fear that this project is, at best, presently in limbo. I only hope the completed section is safely stored for a better day if that is the case.

That’s a lovely model, longshot. The best flying boat model I’ve seen is in the Oban War and Peace Museum – can’t remember the scale of this r/c Sunderland but it was a fair size! –

Geoff Reichelt in Australia has made some huge models/replicas , 1:1 for some types but ‘only’ a 1:10 Empire Flying Boat http://www.airwaveyachts.com.au/Aircraft/Index.html
