😎 I’ve just seen a Short Skyvan fly over Bury St. Edmunds which is in Suffolk, can anyone tell me where this is based and will it be on the airshow circuit this year?

That aircraft is nearly as ugly as my mother-in-law

Hi Newforest
Both pictures of the Skyvan were taken the same day. That of it taxiing when it departed after refueling, the latter a while after it landed. It would appear that it was not too badly damaged as the pilot held it off the starboard mains until the last possible moment and it was on grass.

Excellent use of the search function, so no apologies necessary for reviving a zombie thread! Presumably the two photos were taken on the same day? Hopefully this will not be the end for an endangered species.:)

Short Skyvan G-BEOL emergency landing
Skyvan G-BEOL made an emergency landing at Kidlington on 27 July with a damaged starboard undercarriage leg. It had been in earlier for fuel whilst undertaking para drops from a nearby airfield where it sustained the damage on a take-off. It returned to Kidlington, circled overhead, did a control tower flyby and then landed on the grass with little apparent damage.

Shorts Skyvan
Looking at the photo of the 330 at Blackpool I am sure it is in Gill Airways later colour scheme, as a guess its previous registration might have been G-BHHU.

NEAM have a Shorts 330, and its easy to see how it comes apart since alot of the panels are off…
Pop over to Sunderland and take as much time as you need to study it. Ours is ex-gill airways G-OGIL, which has the unfortunate accolade of being the only SWEPT WING 330….
It was taxied into the hangar literally, and the wings took mpost of the force resulting in a bent spar. 3 degree sweep back which of course wrote it off…

Recent pics, notice the 5 bladed prop.

In pursuing five bladed propellers, I came across this ‘secret’ airfield in Alaska with Skyvans and Providers! You are not allowed to go there, be warned.:D

Blackpool Shorts and other airframes
Hello Glynn,
Sorry i got it wrong by saying it was a ‘Skyvan’ i aquired for you and not a 330! Its not a Lightning or a Heli so im not really that bothered about accuracy as you well know….(sorry purists out there!)
As for the other two airframes im trying to aquire for you, i think ones a 748 and the other may be a BAC 1-11 but i dont know! I will get pics for you to publish so ‘those who know’ out there can identify them for you.
As you so correctly said, now that ive got them for you, they need to be moved sooner rather than later.
Glad to support such a superb Aviation Museum as indeed Millom is and will become with the expansion plans afoot.
Fly Safe as always.

Contact the Ulster Aviation Society,
Have contacted them and awaiting reply.
Anyone fancy volunteering to assist dismantle the 330 ready for transport, it is currently at Blackpool Airport.
We have been asked to remove it ASAP, we also have a dismantled Jetstream 31 at the airport ready for transport.
Now looking at the possibility of a HS748

there handling emerald airways insolvency
and there is another shorts at blackpool sat at the end of the runway
minus its props they were taken off about three months ago
could be useful for spares recovery as looking at it thats all its
good for

A bit grainy and in b&w but here’s a sick SOAF Skyvan;
I don’t believe it. A Skyvan being aerotowed by something even uglier.:D
Unless Babcocks are operating the Skyvan direct from Brize these days they have not operated them for over 12 months. I think they have given up with them now as they have not been seen over W-o-t-G in that time.

Ever thought of contacting Bombardier in Belfast? I’m sure there must be somone there who could tell you the quickest/safest way of taking it apart. Looks a good project, good luck.
Paul
Contact the Ulster Aviation Society, we moved our ‘330’ prototype just over a year ago, you will need to remove the following for transport:-
1> The tail fin / elevator assembly.
2> The wings.
3> Last but not least, the wing box complete with the engine nacelles.

Excellent project for restoration. Relatively simple in engineering terms, all metal held together with nuts and bolts, should provide good training for the team at Millom. The Short series of aircraft (Skyvan, 330 and 360) really do deserve preserving, its such a shame that aircraft have to be recovered from fire dumps went with a litte more planning airframes could move from in service to training aid to museum exhibit.

At 27 years old does it qualify to be historic.
The NMuUSAF have an F-22A Raptor just going on display!

Correction
It appears I was misinformed, after getting corrected information it turns out it is a Short 330, G-SSWA. Currently residing at Blackpool Airport fire dump being used as an evacuation trainer.
At 27 years old does it qualify to be historic.

Ah ok theres one flying at my local airfield dropping skydivers wonderful aeroplane:D
So i assume its going on display in a museum?
That would be a reasonable assumption!:D see link.

Are you able to give any details of which airframe your group has aquired, where it is current located and what time scale you have for movement and restoration, made be forum memebers would be able to help out with the move. I understand that the restoration team memebers require special skills 😀
