Short Stirling undercarriage

I am starting to draught plans for a large ( circa 100″ span ) flying model of a Short Stirling. Does anyone have any pictures or diagrams of the main undercarriage which show how it works. Looking at the few pictures I have it seems that there is a ‘chassis’ which retracts vertically and from that hangs a rearward retracting undercarriage assembly & u/c doors.

can anyone help ?

Thanks

Steve

I don’t imagine there’s anything I could add to a ‘pm’ from 12jaguar, but if I can be of assistance with larger versions of those scans please let me know.

I’ve put Fw37 on to our drawings Officer as he has done detailed drawings of the u/c set-up, hopefully that will answer his query

Nice Halifax.

There used to be a large scale Halifax flying model that was flown during airshows some years ago in the UK IIRC. Elvington’s being one.

Cheers

Short Stirling

Hey everyone,
I am also looking for a couple good drawings of the Short Stirling undercarriage. I have just finished and flown a 146″ Handley Page Halifax.
I am wanting to do the Stirling if I can work out the Undercarriage…..I saw the images you posted. could you send them to my e-mail so I can enlarge them to try to figure out how to make them work for my project…

Slipstream

That is really exciting news – I cannot wait to see her fly :p

I would have imagined that the u/c would be a real nightmare to model. I’ve attached some diagrams and here is a really interesting site on 3D computer animating the Stirling, with a great clip of the retraction process. I real life it took 90 seconds!

Please keep us informed of your progress.

According to the Putnam Shorts book (page 375), the Shorts u/c design was eventually replaced by an improved duplex leg evolved by Turners. Incidentally, the increased incidence was first tried out on the “little bomber” S.31 on 22 November 1938,, after having its main u/c lengthened.

I have read an explanation of the Stirling undercarriage, I suspect in Michael Bowyer’s Stirling book. I can’t check now as it’s in my mum’s bookcase, 150 miles away.

When the boffins at Farnborough decreed the angle of attack needed increasing, it was too late to change the design as the production jigs had already been made.
IIRC, they added a 3 foot “crate” between the mounting points on the wing and the top of the undercarriage legs.

Many thanks for the replies – the info has been of great help, it seems I had it wrong. It’s a double folding mechanism.

There’s a diagram on the Stirling Project’s website which shows the retraction sequence. It’s a bit too small to see the detail but it’s better than ‘nowt.

Not the real thing but there’s a feature in this month’s Scale Aircraft Modeller which shows the separate structures involved to quite good effect. If you like I’ll scan and send to you.
