Short Sundarland Turret info wanted

As you guys on this forum was so helpfull with my project regarding the Canberra T4, I am back with another request…..

A friend of mine at the SAAF museum is busy restoring a turret from a Short Sunderland and want more info regarding it. He has only the Turret with nothing inside. Does anyone perhaps have some Photographs / info that can help him restoring it. There is a plate inside with the marking “FN.7” The other are unreadable.

Sorry to drag this up from the depths of 2009, but are there any updates on this? I’m looking for some reference images for the FN7 for a 1/72 Stirling build, so if anyone can help I’d be most grateful.

FN7? That would double the known number of surviving turrets of this type then. Is it the egg shaped dome?

It is the egg shaped dome. Will get some pictures and post it.

Interesting to see some pics, we’ve just got the cupola which is currently on loan to the Pathfinder Museum at Wyton.

Try this………………….

Why not post a request for information on the Flying Boat Forum on www.seawings.co.uk?

I am sure that someone there will have just what you need….!

Interesting find. The FN7 mid upper turret was fitted to the MkIII (and some MKII) Sunderlands (and other aircraft). Part of the reason they are so rare is that post war Sunderlands (such as the MkV which equiped 35 Squadron in South Africa) did not have the turret.

The egg shape that Cees refered to looks like this:

Any pics, mind you if it’s only the cupola then it’s not exactly a turret but interesting nevertheless.
