RE: Shortest and longest flights
SAS are gonna do Oslo-London with a A340. Its there policy, 1st 6 months the new jets fly only over land before starting laung haul flights over the sea.

RE: Shortest and longest flights
The longest flight I’ve been on was from Schiphol, The Netherlands to Changi, Singapore. 10.526 km about 13 houres in a Boeing 747-400.
A very good airline but still a long flight. The Shortest one from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur, Maleisia about 45 minutes in a A430-300E, a big plane for such a distance.

RE: Shortest and longest flights
Shortest flight I ever went on was Ryanair from Birmingham to Dublin. This was one of the strangest flights I ever went on too. My flight was supposed to depart at around 10.30am, but it was late January and the weather was awful on the day. I got to BHX quite early only to find that most flights had been either cancelled or diverted due to dense fog.
After sitting around for a couple of hours in the main terminal after check-in, I had read the same book twice and nobody seemed to know what what happening with my flight, FR662. Luckily, the fog cleared and my 737 landed at BHX at around midday. The flight would have been quite empty, but my aircraft was also taking on passengers for the earlier Dublin departure which was cancelled due to the fog.
After being herded out to the aircraft (no airbridge was used) I was pushed and jostled to the back of the line of other passengers by other more impatient and rude passengers who were eager to get into Dublin as they were already running very late. I ended up sitting towards the rear of the aircraft (an ex Britannia airways example) close to those noisy P&W JT8D’s. I had only just settled into my seat and the cabin crew were already closing the doors and getting ready for departure. The captain gave an announcment and was very apologetic for the delay and before I knew it, we were taxing to the runway at what seemed like 40mph. The crew were eager for departure and the aircraft felt like it was going to tip over as we turned onto another taxiway.
Yep, this crew even throttled up before our 737 turned onto the runway. I have never experienced such an quick take off since, lord only knows what the angle was on climb out. We got to 26,000ft though, and Dublin only lies 200mls from BHX! Very quick descent into Dublin too, nice landing as well (for a 737). The flight departed from BHX at 1.00pm and landed in DUB at 1.30pm, so it was exactly 30 minutes. Well worth the £59 return fare!!

RE: Shortest and longest flights
Thre’s a shorter one than that… BA (or rather Loganair) have a flight scheduled for 2 minutes, from Westray to Papa Westray, in the Orkney Isles. The two runways are alligned, with only a stetch of water between them. The actual distance flown is less than the length of the runways at Heathrow.
It’s in the Guinness Book of Records.

RE: Shortest and longest flights
Well my shortest flight was SCQ-OVD with both lie 300 km away from each other and takes only 15 minutes in a B727, in their way to BCN. Now the flight doesn´t stop there any more. My longest was to EZE from MAD but I wasn´t much concious about it since was when I was 10. The longest after this was Dallas-Frankfurt on a LH A340 and took 10h.45m. The food was reasonable good. My criteria to choose an airline is:
-Four engines if it´s ETOPS.
-New plan and with safety standards.
-Good inflight service and the one which the best pitch in “monkey class”.
-In too long flights I prefer stopovers (tourist class syndrome)

LAST EDITED ON 18-04-01 AT 05:40 PM (GMT)[p]I have also been on a boeing 747 classic of virgin. No computer games i know but there was comedy programs and movies on and there was a few radio stations.Food was ok.A good selection of duty free as well. The flight was delayed 5 hours, something wrong with the engines, although we did get a voucher for 10% discount of our next virgin flight and £20 pound meal vouchers.

RE: Shortest and longest flights
Interesting coments about Air New Zealand. Weren’t they voted one of the best airlines in the world with Singapore Airlines and Palmair third (the british airline with one 737-200) in a recent poll.
On the subject of long haul, the longest I’ve flown is Heathrow San Francisco with Virgin and it was great, 8 movie channels and computer games to keep you occupied throughout the flight. Also flown to Orlando a few times with them and haven’t had a problem although the 747 classics don’t have the computer games they are still the best airline I’ve flown with.
I’ll be flying with them on Saturday and as always I’m looking forward to a pleasant flight with no problems such as those mentioned above (hopefully).

Air NewZeland is a TERRIBLE airline. I flew them Auckland-Mel and it was horrible. I wonder if some one flew with them on a long haul, what would become of him.

RE: Shortest and longest flights
I’ve been on long haul flights – I had one of those multi-stopover holidays to Australia and New Zealand, and the severe misfortune of flying with Air New Zealand!!! They really are the worst airline I’ve ever flown with – the cabin attendants are rude, offensive, the meals are not fit to eat and pray that you don’t need to request a special diet like I did because they are totally incapable of getting meal requests right. I always thought that you should drink plenty of juice and water whilst flying, but Air New Zealand obviously do not agree because if you can find a cabin attendant who is prepared to serve drinks then you are lucky. Don’t waste your time with a window seat, they do all they can to prevent you looking through the window, even on afternoon flights like the one I was on. All window blinds had to be pulled fully down or else!! Also if you actually manage tpo get off on your holiday without hitch you would be really lucky – it is not unknown for the reservations staff to casually cancel all your reservations without your prior knowledge – this happened to me, luckily I always make a point of reconfirming my flight reservations, but I could just as easily have lost a damned expensive holiday due to the sheer negligence and incompetence of Air New Zealand!!!!!!
PS I really hope that someone who works for Air New Zealand will read this, but I doubt it!!

RE: Shortest and longest flights
I was on board the flight Johanesburg-NY and it almost kills you. I am never travelling that route again. Bloody they show all stupid movies, SA songs…cant understand a thing. Lousy food, and a hell cramped 747. Hell is better than this flight.

RE: Shortest and longest flights
Well the worlds shortest flight is of 5 mins and 45 seconds Between Stuart Island and Florida Is. in the Pacific. Longest flight Johanesburg-NY…15 hrs 48 mins. SAA uses a B747-400 long reach. And I flew Singapore-Melbourne, it took 8 hrs 23 mins, great flight.
