'Shot-down German bomber' spotted in reservoir thanks to Google Earth

the shepshed one is funny, many years back it was drained for repair, and guess what, no german bomber, :diablo:

Ok,I got one for you..
Near Garreg Goch mountain,Brecon Beacons,there is a unknown identity spitfire in a bog,which is a war grave.Confirmed by locals
Up until a few years ago the tip of the tailfin could be seen,it is now totally submerged.
The exact location is fenced off.
Unfortunatly google earth dont go down to ground level,but you can see the wreckage of vampire vz106,the tail booms have been arranged to represent the airframe.
Also scan south west of Garreg Goch and you should find a Cessna/Piper high wing aircraft.

Although pretending to be multiple different posters on this forum Steve C-T did post the Form 1180 for the Menteith Spitfire on this forum.

Actually I think the date was right, there is a very brief mention.

“On 3rd June 6 accidents occurred, but only in one case was the pilot injured.”

Not what you would call wonderful information but it is start.

There wasn’t any mention of that crash in the No.58 OTU ORB, a fatal crash close to the airfield was mentioned on the 29th June and there was no month end accidents list for July.

Maybe its time to make another one of these.

It is a homebuilt ROV.

It was designed to go down 25m and send pictures back to the surface. I made 3 different designs – the last one I sold to a marine biologist.

Useful for exploring the bottom of lakes for fish or German bombers.

Unfortunately the best we ever found was a lost shoe in Ullswater.

I found my details of P8187 it crashed on 3.6.43. Was up there about 40 year ago and did attempt to look out for some locals that may have known about it, but was only passing through with my parents so didnt find any in the time i had, so it must still be there.

Here’s how the war went,

if it was 1 engine it was a Spitfire or Messerschmit
2 engines, almost certainly German
4 engines, Lancaster

oh, and lakes on hills are littered with sunken aircraft.

Seems that these rumours persist everywhere, Nick – There is supposedly a “German bomber” complete with crew in a reservoir near Shepshed…

Actually, there was a ditching there, but it ain’t German: Blackbrook Reservoir

I’m aware of a crash in the Lake of Menteith, but at the moment I don’t have any details as my records are still far from complete. Some reports suggest that the aircraft was recovered but I can’t confirm this.

Sorry I can’t be of more help.

Just to update: This was Spitfire P8187 of 58OTU which dived into the Lake of Menteith near Aberfoyle. No other details known at this point.

I believe the wreckage of Beaufort X8938 still lies at Busbie Muir Resr. However, I have not yet researched this aircraft, so I cannot confirm this definitely.

I’ll come back on this when I get some more information.

On my grandfathers recollections on the Ardrossan reservoir – the last one before the turn off for Dalry ( i think called the Busby Muir).

Is this a confusion with the Swordfish or any other aircraft crash in this area?

As you’ll probably have gathered, this is nothing more than a fictional story. There are no Junkers Ju88’s which are still unaccounted for. All have been located, and none crashed in the vicinity of Whinhill Reservoir or the small body of water to the East.

When they contacted me, the press were told quite plainly that I had absolutely no solid evidence of any Ju88 crash at this location. Nevertheless, they produced a feature claiming to have my support and attributed remarks to me which were not provided by me and which are contrary to the facts.

Hope this helps clarify the issue.

Presumably as it is in a reservoir, it will be like those arado 196’s nr russia, can’t be touched for fear of contaminating the water supply with oil/fuel etc..

How about a Hampden?

You should always be careful with remains on google earth as i recently looked at the ‘substantial’ remains of the battleship Tirpitz on google earth only to find a long square block.

Really the only way to tell what it is is to go and dive it or visit it and see as satellite imagery being the fine tool it is can only show you the where but not always the what.

The mighty Tirpitz (note the small lakes from the ‘tallboy’ misses).
