Should Alan Shearer be called into the England squad?

Okay, he’s retired. But he’s playing well and he is the best striker in the country. Absolutely everyone respects him and all the players admire him. In fact, he has been the best striker of the last 25 years. If you were Sven, would you ask him to return?

Owen has enough ability, but Heskey…Vassell…Fowler…Phillips…Smith – those guys are just not good enough.

Well, if there’s any truth in The Sun‘s backpage headline today, he is leaving football (and going to White Hart Lane)

70k a week… are they nuts?

I’m incensed about Bowyers’ act of stupidity (YET AGAIN!!!) the other night. Is it time to kick him out of football? There was nothing but malice in his actions, he even admitted it to his manager!

YES.

We play Nationwide sides every summer in a pre-season friendly. I saw us get beat by West Brom this summer 🙁

But I am English and used to live near Middlesbrough, so those are my true colours.

RE: Should Alan Shearer be called into the England squad?

I think he must be recalled.

Heskey = donkey
Smith = idiot
Defoe = unproven and inexperienced
Vassell = the best chance, but still too unproven

He is the 2nd best striker in the country. Who is better apart from Owen?

I agree with dcfly, hes just not the man he used to be. Towards the end of his International career you could see that he didn’t have the same ability and pace as he used to have, but Keegan just wouldn’t drop him.
He may be doing OK in the permiership but I don’t think hes International class anymore, its a much better idea to try and blood some of the younger players into the side.

Shearer may be doing ok in the premiership, but I dont think he’s international class anymore, he’s lost a lot of his pace, yeah, he can still head a few goals and hit the ball as hard as he ever could, but on the world scene he’d be found out very quickly.
We’ve seen the best of Shearer so lets keep those memories, there are plenty of good up and coming youngsters around but is Uncle Sven brave enough to pick them?
The likes of Vassel, Smith, Defoe,etc, are good enough but seriously lack experience, and the only way to get that is to play them regulary

Shearer should only be allowed back if he promises to stop running around after scoring with one arm in the air. It drives me nuts…

RE: Should Alan Shearer be called into the England squad?

Hi,
Shearer, even if Sven begs him to come back, will not.
Actually there are very few good strikers in England, Germaine Defoe is too young, James Beattie is perhaps not yet ready, Alan Smith has hit a slump, alongwith the entire Leeds United team, Emile Heskey is badly out of form, Michael Owen is probably the only guy who can get you some goals. Is Kevin Campbell(Everton) a citizen? If so, he is in good form, could try him. But Shearer in all probability wont come back.
