Should police carry guns?

For all those that have not already read the article:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/nottinghamshire/4714172.stm

Should ‘normal’ police officers be allowed to carry firearms? (when I say ‘normal’ I mean the avaerage police officer on the beat, not those that are already trained in the use of firearms!)

Imho, I think they should because although the level of gun related crime is falling gradually, I feel that any police officer should be given the power to defend themselves when incidents like the above happen. Thankfully this event has not ended in tradgey yet, but I would be interested to know what you think?

My gut feeling says that they should, but “Arm Waver” has a valid point.
Not sure what the case is today but in South Africa a number of Police Officers have been killed for the sole purpose of stealing their weapons.

I think that maybe increasing the size of the armed unit is a better solution.

I personally think no.
You carry a weapon and you will become a target.
If some police are armed and some not the level of police officers shot (and possible by standers) would increase as the criminal would probably shoot first rather than run the risk of be shot.
