Now we are living in a unbalance world according to some policies makers/senior think tank officials. The demise of the USSR have changed a lot of things in our lives. Most poor and under develop nations which used to favour USSR,now have no choice but to change to the only superpower left(US).The US are able to dictate any policies and stands w/o fear because they knows that might is right. Some of this stands clearly are one sided and this makes you think, what if there is another superpower to counter such injustice?Check and balance.Every possible emerging superpower that might challenge the US dominance are being curtailed in one way or another. The questions is which nations seems to be the most ideal candidate?RUSSIA,CHINA,SAUDI,INDIA,EURO?

RE: Should we have another superpower?
Language doesn´t give common identity at all. Britain in terms of culture, values, way of understanding society, organizing things and even the way to have fun, to enjoy, is fully european. Other thing is how we feel individualy. Of course there´re difference between a German or an Italian or a British but the real base is similar and nothing in common with americans which stay very far appart in general terms.

RE: Should we have another superpower?
We could have a lot more influence in Europe than we could with the US but as I said previously, it all depends on the EU being sorted out and dragged back into the 18th Century!
The way I see it there are 2 choices:
Go with the US = Become the 51st state
Go with the EU = Become part of the 4th Reich.
Great choice eh??

RE: Should we have another superpower?
And I get upset when I hear Brits slagging off America(ns) for no other reason than that it is/they are America(ns). IMHO Britain is far better off aligned with America than it is with Europe. We have more in common with the US in terms of shared language and culture, and more to gain from throwing our lot in with them.
Of course, we missed a trick back in the ’50s. With the Empire coming apart we had the opportunity to make the Commonwealth an important world presence, but instead chose to turn our backs on it in a futile attempt to get into the EEC.

RE: Should we have another superpower?
The only way to become a power in the EU is unity, awake identity. However we like it or not, we have been sharing a common history for thousand years (sometimes with alliances, some with battles, some with common events and so on) which have made us to see things in a different way as perceived in other planes. How the EU works is different, but from unity we have to overcome them. If we don´t do that we´ll be US henchmen not allies or friends. I get so upset when I hear americans make fun of the British.

RE: Should we have another superpower?
IMO the EU will never be a superpower in the US class – a global player, maybe, but not a superpower. Superpower status and the ability to act as such requires unity of will and decision making and that will never happen while you have an entity made up of multiple nations, each with their own agenda. The only solution to this is political unification, and no matter how much politicians and Eurocrats talk about it, I don’t think it will ever happen. It will simply be a step too far.

RE: Should we have another superpower?
The only viable option is the EU.
But this simply will not happen whilst the EU remains illegitimate and opaque. The democratic deficit needs urgent attention.
Otherwise, popular support will just not be there. The British, lest we forget one of the more powerful EU members, are still caught between the US and the EU and the intransigence of the EU does nothing to help this.
So basically the EU can and will challenge the US…but only when it reforms itself.

RE: Should we have another superpower?
Well guys don´t make our americans friends to be dissapointed in having someone else in town 🙂 No one in short time. In the future, my bet is EU+Russia together. Being an European country and needing cash and self confidence, only in his natural enviroment could be appreciated. It´s clear that Russians are addressing their trade, culture and policies in being in the EU club. For me it´s OK. So I see a huge EU from Lissbon to Valdibostok….I haven´t told when….a long time.

RE: Should we have another superpower?
We will, its only a matter of time. It will be either a very powerful EU with a large combined armed force component both conventional and nuclear, or China.
Regards, Glenn.

RE: Should we have another superpower?
Another superpower would be another cold war – more military spending, another arms race and more surrogate wars.
I am all for spheres of influence both economic and military. Let all the great nations have their areas of dominance ( i dont mean this in a colonial sense)and let everyone feel important.
But the truth my friends is there is no perfect system or solution. ( i feel I am going around in circles )
