-The Land Rover 90D is my most versatile and tough car ever. Now in temporary
storage due to utterly stupid Dutch tax regulations. Will be on the road again when I find myself a job.
-The Daihatsu Cuore is absolutely the worst car I ever owned (out of a total of around 15). Will go to the scrapper ASAP when I find myself a job 😀 .

Well, right now, I am driving a 2003 Pontiac Sunfire similar to the one below.

I learnt to drive in MK1 Nissan Micra Collette! My first carwas a Fjord blue MK4 Cortina. After 5 more Cortinas, 3 MK2 Escorts and a Capri 3litre (I am originally an Essex Boy!!), I moved up (or down depends how you view them) to Rover SD1. Had 3 2600 (which all eventually siezed due to camshaft oilway problems) and a Vitesse. Now got 2 Lexus LS400s (ones a jap import, still dont know what every button does in it!) and a ’96 Rover coupe T-top. Hurrah!

Thanks! Only had it a couple of months, and I’m loving it. Nice mini Ferrari too, very nearly got one of those as my first car, but got a boring Corsa instead. 😉

My daily drivers are nothing too unusual, A large Ford truck (bought to tow the car below to events), my wife’s new Mini, and my “good” car a M-B CLK.
But I do have a pair of vintage cars.

A 1914 Stutz “Bearcat” roadster (actually a recreation built for a television series real ones are far too rare and expensive)
and a 1963 Avanti, a low production (by US standards) glassfibre bodied V-8 powered GT car.

My first car was a Talbot Sunbeam 1.3l.

Second was another Sunbeam, but this one had a 1.6l Sport engine, a quick shift 5-speed box with a 1.3 diff. At that time all the ‘boy racers’ were running about in XR3i’s. From a standing start I could beat anything on the road. If I remember it could go 0-60 in just under 5 seconds, although top end was only 85mph.

Now I have a Hyundai Matrix 1.5TDi and the wife has a Citreon Berlingo 1.9D.

I’ll see if I can dig out a photo or two of my Sunbeam.

Learnt to drive in a Peugot 205 and 106…the 106 (which was brand new) had an off-centre steering wheel, as did others I later looked at when looking for a car – found the off-centre steering wheel did my shoulders in so avoided.

Somewhere there is a photo of my beloved Focus, probably in one of my holiday albums 😀 Maybe the car should have a photo album of her own “Places where I have parked”.

A330-300…with regards to a good first car…as you’ve worked out already, the smaller the better (particularly insurance wise!) to start off with…How about a second hand new model Fiesta? I believe the new model was launched in March 2002, so you should be able to find a reasonably priced one in good nick. Ford have (in my opinion!) raised their game in the past 10 years, both in terms of design and in terms of quality, and their cars generally prove to be good runners. Ideally I would say get a Focus – they really are easy cars to drive, hence a number of driving schools including the AA use them. However, when I bought mine at the age of 23, with one year’s no claims bonus and a clean license, it cost me just over £600 to insure (it’s a 1.8 Zetec) So I shudder to think what a 17 year old lad would get quoted 😀 But the Fiestas are really just baby Focus’s, worth a thought?

Yep, I have to agree about the Focus, well, even Ford – they have raised their game so much. Their cars are good looking, practical, cheap etc etc.

Don’t talk to me about French. My Megane has just had new power steering pump, track rod ends, balljoint, wheel bearing, strut bearing, spring and all at 700quid. The thing is too noisy on the motorway too.

The brake pedal on the saxo seemed to travel down alot before they actually started to brake, but when they did they seemed OK. I’ve not hammered one so don’t know how they hold up in that dept.

The French are probably worse than the Italians these days with regards to quality. 😉

The problem is it’s French. 😉 Mechanically it’s good reputation for reliablilty, but my car is a 2001 Y reg with 47k and is showing signs of wear.
It’s very nimble though, and chuck-about-able. 😉

I was quoted over £3,000 insurance on the Megane, hell no! 😮

Meanwhile, I’ve been looking at the Punto, a great litle car. On my wishlist. What is the Toyota Yaris like as a starter car? Obviously I’m thinking too ahead but that’s life.

Yes they’re seriously nice for a little city car, I’ve already posted my dream car. 😉 Been lucky enough to have been driven around in one on a few occasions. I’m yet to hear a car engine that makes a nicer noise, although the Lamborghini Diablo is up there with it…. Infact I’m craving to hear it again… 😉
