I can’t find any information about Shudy Camps, or RAF Shudy (?) It might possibly have just been
accommodation for nearby Castle Camps ?
My late mother who was at nearby Castle Camps as a WAAF , used to talk about it. So if anyone has
any information, it would be gratefully received. The WAAFs at Castle Camps were billeted in
Saffron Walden

Shudy camps is not far from me and I used to work there, There were military huts there at the top of the village (now woodland) They were as far as I know used by a black American unit of engineers or pioneers in the build up to D day it is a fair distance from the old Castle camps airfield . I don’t know if the site was originaly billets for airmen, Kev

Alan, ask the members on the AIX forum? There is not much info at the moment but these guys should be able to help with your quest. Link.

Thanks Adrian. I found it on the map, and it does show one big house at the end of a drive.
Of course that may have no connection, as I don’t know it’s age.
I just wondered if there were aircraft at Shudy or not, or if such a place as RAF Shudy existed.
If not, I was wondering about accommodation, or if there was an officers mess there ?

I’ll see if I can find my map of Castle Camps, and see whether there was any accommodation in Shudy Camps – it’s the name of the next village.
