shutter release operations ?

Hi all. Would anybody know how (in laymans terms please) I can find out how many times I have operated the shutter release button on my Nikon D40X ?

There is a reason for this request, at the moment the camera is putting out negative vibes ! telling me to operate the shutter release again ! but this has no effect, after very many attempts ! I have consulted many camera forums and there could be an easy fix … lubricate two nylon gear wheels below the bottom cover ! but also a lot of talk about the fact that the camera may have a life of 35,000 to 36,000 operations 😡

Any known answers would be appreciated ???

Keith.

I reckon about 900,000 of the recorded images are feline in content.

So, Moggy, if your camera ever fails it’ll be quite a catastrophe……….

Wow ! thank you all for your inputs into this, I have tried to download the suggested software from Robbo, as of yet unsuccesfully !
As for the camera problem, which I find is very common with Nikons, I followed the advice given in the website below and it seems to have cured the problem, a lot of people seem to think Nikon do not lubricate these gear wheels ! and after some use they seem to need it ????
Maybe a good thing to do before the dreaded message ” operate release button again” appears on your display ???

Thanks again to all 🙂 🙂 Keith.

Thanks Robbo, I was aware of all the other data, but didn’t know about total shutter count.

I’m amazed a bit of software can tell you how many times your camera has taken a picture, is there a way of finding out in camera?

i think there must be !! something that i have never looked into as i have never given it any concern ( i just accept it is going to be binned evetualy ) if it serves its purpose and serves well till that point i’m happy

but i just do not believe you can’t see the info without software

there must be either an in camera log or data in the stored picture !!

this comes up regular on photography sites and to be honnest realy doesn’t warant the associated worry

a lot have a pop at modern technology and reliability being worse than film cameras but in realistic terms imagine a film camera after that many shots

if indeed the mechanicals would last that long

the reality is with digital we can all now shoot pro volumes thus wear out gear as quick as a pro

i try to use my d40 as i used my olympus om’s and nikon film cameras

and shoot like for like volumes as the problem is usualy the mechanical shutter rather than the solid state components

a problem any heavy use slr will eventualy suffer

although to be fair sometimes i get a reluctant shutter button but it remmedies itself if switched off and back on

but i purchased a demmo model at huge discount from jessops so expected a niggle

but planning an upgrade to the d3000 which is effectively the d60 sensor with other upgrades added on such as faster multi frame shooting if required !!

If you load an exif viewer such as Opanda iExif and right click on one of your photos you’ll find the data field for total number of shots near the bottom of the list.

Is that reliable, what if you reset the camera, like I have on occasions?

*Grins*

As is well known here I don’t do airshow photography as such.

Two reasons

1) There are so many dedicated lens guys here with expensive equipment and the urge to take pictures I am unlikely to be able to produce anything as good as they do.

2) When I used to attempt it I suddenly realised that I had seen most of the airshows I went to through a little viewfinder. So I stopped and now watch the shows.

My camera (a Canon ‘bridge’ camera) is really a visual diary. I reckon about 900,000 of the recorded images are feline in content.

Well IMHO you pressed your shutter button a bit to much lately… ;)… No more bursts at Airshows for you anymore mr. Moggy

I use pentax K-x (also for vids) but that doesn’t make my shuttercounter up…

perhaps someone else has a different view on this subject

That’s fun.

My image number is well over 1 million. Is that a function of having used it for quite a few videos?
