"Shuttleworth acquired Lockheed 12a"?

I have picked up a rumour on an email group that the Shuttleworth Collection has acquired a Lockheed 12a (‘now in US from NZ’). Can anyone confirm or deny this or provide an ID if true

I had never thought of a Lockheed 12A as a potential for the collection at Old Warden, but if the rumour has any substance I would certainly welcome it.
Having one airworthy in a UK collection is very appropriate, a number were impressed into use by the RAF at the beginning of WW2 and Sidney Cotton made good use of them.

Well this is one that was in NZ 3 years ago. I believe it crashed retuning to base from Wanaka.

Doesn’t the Science Museum have one already down in Wroughton?

Its now displayed at South Kensington – suspended in a rather dramatic fashion thanks to Skysport Engineering.

The Science Museum Lockheed is suspended from the ceiling in the ground floor gallery at South Kensington. It looks impressive but I always think the area is a bit overcrowded so it is difficult to really appreciate the Lockheed.

The one at the Science Museum is a Lockheed 10 Electra, not a 12 Electra Junior, which is a scaled down version of the 10. Great news if it is coming to the UK, two or three were used by the Government for secret aerial photograph pre-WW2, but registered as part of British Airways – interestingly, at least one of them survives http://www.orpheusweb.co.uk/vicsmith/History/GAFTL.html – in fact, it could be this one, as it has been in NZ and now in the US. I hope the rumours are true, i’d love the chance to see a 1930’s airliner in the skies that isn’t a de Havilland product (not that they’re not lovely enough), and would make a good comparison with the Rapide at Shuttleworth.

The Electra at Kensington is one of my favourite exhibits, but it is hard to appreciate it as mentioned by WJ244. Ideally it’d be brought down and painted up in 1930’s BA markings, in my opinion.

Ooh! That would be good if true. The Lockheed twins are so elegant, much more so (if you ask me) than the DC-3. It would also look rather good in a “vic” with Avro XIX and an Air Atlantique Dove/Devon…:)

Let’s cross our fingers.

The aircraft in John’s photo did ground loop I think after a failure of one u/c leg . However it was repaired at Omaka and sadly , left NZ for the States not so long ago .

I do hope this is for real and its one of Sidney Cotton’s aircraft as we can have a good discussion as to just what colour Camotint was.
I alos hope as they don’t have it in that horrible mirror polished bare metal which is so unatural its just plain wrong.

The wonders of googling “Shuttleworth Lockheed 12”:

On the crossing subject I spent an hour or so in a friends hanger under the wing of his Lockheed 12 talking about Atlantic crossings. He is going to England in it next summer for the Shuttleworth show. He flew it up from New Zealand.

I have a feeling in my waters that someone’s got the wrong end of a very long stick.:) We may see it, but I don’t think it’s been acquired!

I talked with some at Old Warden yesterday, and the concensus of opinions was ‘What?…. nah!’….. and ‘No the Gladiator is NOT going to Malta this year’!

The Sidney Cotton aircraft had been listed for sale in Trade-A-Plane for quite some time, thought not recently.

I believe it was owned and based in San Angelo, Texas.

If it had been the case – which it seems that it is not – that the Shuttleworth Collection intended to acquire a Lockheed 12A to add to its collection, to me that would have seemed a surprising move. Does the Shuttleworth Collection have a stated policy concerning aircraft acquisition and, if so, what is that?

Flown yes, restored would be pushing things a bit too far.

I would suggest looking here for updates on the PO2. Or better still join the SVAS.
