Shuttleworth Uncovered / Meet The Pilots 2011

I didn’t think it would be possible to improve on the atmosphere of an air display at Old Warden but I went to my first ‘Shuttleworth Uncovered’ Display yesterday and I have to say it was just magical! The weather was great, the flying display its usual intimate spectacle but there was something wonderful about wandering about with the display aircraft parked amongst the crowd.

Well done all at Shuttleworth; another permanent ‘fixture’ on my calendar! 🙂

Sunday was my first Shuttleworth, and I now know what I have been missing! Wonderful atmosphere, different from any other UK airshow. And the Edwardians at the end were fantastic. The four Miles were a delight. Nice Lysander shot, DCW – I’ll never forget watching it followed by those shy Edwardians in that evening light. Quite beautiful.

It was hot work rigging and derigging the vintage gliders. Great to see the BE2 and the Fokker Dr1 turn up.

With the end of another Old Warden airshow season, can I take advantage of this thread to pass on my thanks to everyone involved for a great series of airshows? Whoever arranged the weather deserves a pay rise.
Looking forward to next year. May will see my 143rd Old Warden display….

I was there too. What a fantastic show. That Miles formation was the highlight for me.

It’s one of the most relaxing, enjoyable airshows you can attend.

There’s a selection of photos from the show in this slideshow:

http://www.flickr.com//photos/shuttleworthpix/sets/72157627747460286/show/

I totally agree, This was my first visit to this particular event and I have to say I adored it. The chance to get so close to so many of the collections aircraft as well as the demon and Peter Holloway’s Storch was an honour and allowed so many different angle photos.
The flying itself was sublime and the sun lit up the aircraft beautifully, I also feel so glad I finally got to the the Edwardians fly that just added to the magic and forfilled something I had wanted to see for a long time.

Hope todays show goes great the weather looks good, Sadly I am working so can not be there. Safe show people enjoy Old Wardens magic.

Tomorrow looks good. Does anyone know what time the flying is as I can’t seem to see it on the website?

Thanks

We went to the first ‘meet the pilots’, but sadly could not make this one. It was quite one of the best displays that I have ever seen. The lack of visitors is a puzzle, because they are missing a display like no other. Part of me hopes that too many people don’t discover it though, as it would spoil that intimate atmosphere.

Ignore the last bit, just me being selfish!

It was a good day. I was a bit surprized that more people didn’t turn up. I didn’t leave until after 8pm. Helping to get some of the aircraft of the airfield and the Kirby Kite into the hangar. A few more aeroplanes where still out when I left.

Why do more people not go to this event?

Well it is going to be a regular fixture on my calendar from now on.

I usually do a few of the regular ‘first Sunday in the month’ shows but as yet I’ve never done a ‘Proms Display’. I have to say that the relative quiet of the ‘paddock’ certainly added to the feel of the event for me; it all felt very civilised and almost private!

The only down-side at all was that because of another commitment I had to leave before the ‘Edwardians’.

Great photographs (everybody)…..they almost make-up for missing the end of the display!

Why do more people not go to this event? Since its inception a couple of years ago, it seems to draw a smaller crowd than other evening shows despite a) being a unique concept, b) having tremendous weather for the most part and c) being held on a ‘free’ Saturday, with no competition. It’s been pretty well advertised this year from what I’ve seen, but the crowds were down. Those who didn’t go missed out, it was quite brilliant.

Bizarre.

Anyway, here are a few shots from the day and a link to Huw Hopkins’ GAR report with a lot more detail regarding the show, for those interested.

Saturday at Old Warden was a wonderful day, great aircraft and a wonderful atmosphere, it was my first time to see the Edwardians in flight, they were a great sight.
