Shuttleworth Visit – 18 Feb 07

With the chance of a bit of flying, I thought I could try out my 1.5x teleconverter at Old Warden. I left St Ives in a bit of sunshine and blue sky. By the time I got to the Bedfordshire airfield, 45 minutes later, there was low cloud and it was cold. The thermometer on my bike was reading +9c but I could still see my breath turning white in front of me. After having lunch, I watched a microlight keep disappear into cloud as it circled the airfield so I called it a day and came home. I think a visit to Duxford during the week to try out my new piece of kit.

Klemm

Hi David,

The Swedish markings would be more authentic but the Swedish scheme is well represented, whereas the Luftwaffe isn’t.

That, coupled with the fact that Clive Denny did such a nice job on it just before I bought it(!) will ensure it remains in its Luftwaffe scheme in my ownership.

All the best

Herr E PLeine.

I presume that, with the weather, Janie didn’t manage to get over there in the Chippy?

No Janie did not make it.

Pen Pusher, your technique of using the monopod.
I know I have read this on here somewhere before but can you please run though this for me again?

What camera, settings etc.

Many thanks in advance.

Brian.

Well Brian

With my Sony Alpha 100 (a non DSLR with a 10 second timer can also be used) securely attached to the monopod the strap is wrapped around the pole for added security in case the fixing plate fails. I also have a remote shutter release attached. Keeping the pole vertical I hold it above my head but I have the camera on the end angled slightly downwards for better weight distribution rather than holding the monopod at an angle.

The settings I use are non. I leave it on ‘AUTO’ and let the camera do all the work. I look at the subject through the viewfinder at eye level and what you see at eye level is generally the same from high up, but at a different angle.

Hold the monopod up high, as i said, trying to keep it as vertical as psossible as a reference point, and with my remote release I press it part of the way down and listen for the camera to do its ‘thing’ and then try and keep as still as I can as I press the release all the way down and take the photo. I check the image and if I have chopped off a nose or tail I hold the pole vertical again and I adjust my stance, very slightly and repeat the process until I get the shot I like. Usually can be two or three. The beauty of digital, you can delete the ones that are no good there and then.

This is a very hit and miss way of doing it at the moment but at some point I will invest in a Zigview.

Hope this all makes sense and go out and experiment and don’t worry about the strange looks you will get. 😀

Errr….. should make clear it’s a motorbike I ride.

I should imagine it would be a nice cycle ride in the summer, only 60 mile round trip. 😀 😀 😀

Brian

I rode my Raleigh Grifter from Royston to Wyton when I was 13 to watch the Canberras, similar distance and not really the best bike to go touring on, how would the youth of today cope with only 3 gears?
