I have a quest about “fly by wire” (FBW), the F-16 was first com-
bat aircraft that was completely FBW and use a side stick con-
troller for roll and and pitch control. Since then, Several
civilian aircraft have used this arrangement but only the SU-27
(series) and the XF-23 are the only combat aircraft to use it!
My question is “why couldn’t the designers side stick use a
twisting motion for rudder and eliminate the rudder peddles?”
I don’t know about the SU-27 but, I know the F-16 has about a
half inch of movement on the rudder peddles. To me it only seems
to be logical to place the yaw axis under the control of the side
stick, with a twisting motion!
