Sigma 120-400mm – Your thoughts?

I’m thinking about getting a new lens for my Nikon D50. I have been using a Nikkor 70-300mm zoom which came with the camera. While this is reasonable, at zooms of 270-300mm, it is slightly out of focus. The 300mm is ok for most of the airshow photography that I do, though 400mm would be useful in some circumstances. I spotted the Sigma 120-400mm f/4.5-5.6 DG OS HSM (Nikon AF), and wondered if anyone had any experience of it?

Sigma lenses from my experience are actually quite good. It is worthwhile checking if you can get your lens of choice calibrated – I did this for my camera and I have absolutely no complaints about quality.

Thanks for the links. For now I’ve spent the money on some new tyres for my Jeep, and decided to wait until I can find a shop with one in stock that I can try. Most of the camera shops around here don’t stock them and will only order in, but only if you are buying, not just to try.

Thanks. Do you have any airshow images taken with this lens you could post here?

I have such a lens.

I am satisfied with the quality that I am gettiong but it is not professional quality that is for sure.

If you want professional quality you need to search for highly expensive lenses without zoom capacity.

But then you will need more than one camera, and more than one lens

With Sigma it’s best to try one out in the shop before buying, they do not always have as strong a reputation as other manufacturers, but get a good one and it gets excellent results.

Can you post an example from your lens?

All are Sigma 150-500 pictures here http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/showthread.php?t=93485

Thanks. Interesting that you have positive results. Can you post an example from your lens?

I saw a quite in-depth review on a forum lasting several pages, concluding that the image quality ( sharpness of focus ) let it down. I know zoom lenses are a compromise compared to a fixed length, but I came away from the review feeling rather cautious about the lens. A friend who used to deal in hig end cameras and lenses also warned me away from it.

I’d still like to hear from anyone who has got the 120-400mm Sigma.

I have the similar but slightly larger Sigma 150-500mm OS HSM and use it regularly for airshows with a Nikon D700. It’s internal motor focuses quickly and the OS is a great help. This Sigma lens range works well for me.
