Sign of success – the 15th May fund raiser at Shoreham.

A little belatedly, but here are a few images from the recent signing at the museum, courtesy of Mr Fraser Gray.

The day was a huge success, with a BIG queue of people waiting to meet the veterans and have their prints & books etc. signed. The first people began to queue at 8am, despite the fact that the museum didn’t open until 10am, with the signing starting an hour later. We tried to give people a chance to speak to the veterans, whilst at the same time keeping the queue moving so that everyone could get the chance to meet them. I’m pleased to say we just about managed to get everybody through by the end of the afternoon session.

Once again the veterans all had a great time, and a lot of people commented how different the whole atmosphere of the event was from the signings that you get at galleries and airshows. In fact, I’m told that Nigel Rose said he will only sign for us in future!

The amount raised on the day was a staggering £6,200, which if you add the money raised at the two other signings we held at the museum last year in aid of The Battle of Britain London Monument, the grand total raised is a fantastic £10,500!!!!

So a very big thank you to all who have made this possible, from the veterans to those who brought along their prints etc. to the museum volunteers, who that day, and every summer Sunday, give up their time for free to keep alive the memory of the Battle of Britain, and those who were part of it.

Don’t forget that we have a Luftwaffe Battle of Britain pilot, Ernst Poschenreider, at the museum this coming Bank Holiday Monday (30th May), along with Peter Ayerst, and Gerald Stapleton, who will all be available to sign your books & prints etc.

The first batch of photos – 1) Terry Clark (Sgt, Air Gunner on Blenheims, 219 Sqn) 2) Mike Croskell (Sgt, Pilot, 213 Sqn), 3) Jack Riddle (Flt/Lt, 601 Sqn), 4) Gerald ‘Stapme’ Stapleton (F/O, 603 Sqn), 5) Bob Doe (P/O 234 & 238 Sqn), 6) Tom Neil (P/O, 249 Sqn), 7) Robin Lucas (P/O, 141 Sqn), 8) Paddy Barthropp (F/O, 602 Sqn), 9) Nigel Rose (P/O, 602 Sqn), 10) Jimmy Corbin (Sgt, 66 & 610 Sqn).

Sorry I couldn’t make it this time Geoff, but I’m delighted to hear you had such a succesful day there, and especially good to see Bob looking well. I’m not in the slightest bit surprised about Nigel’s decision, unlike some other signing events, your museum makes a concerted effort to ensure that the veterans are treated with the respect they fully deserve. Won’t be able to make the 30th, but I will certainly be back down again at some point this summer.

A few more images from the 15th.

The first two show the half of the queue that was outside of the museum. Inside the signing, with yours truly managing to get in two of the images :p . Bob Doe does his impression of a Bond ‘baddie’, and Gerald wants to sell you a book. The tie is always worn at events like this, though not on ‘Spitfire Ace’ for some reason 😀
