The Johnson family (of wax fame) has found the wreckage of the original Carnauba Sikorsky amphibian that the family used on an epic trip in the 1930s. In 1997, the family had a replica of the original built and it’s been shown at EAA AirVenture. The original was found off the coast of Indonesia.
The original amphibian flew to Brazil in 1928 but was later lost in Indonesia in 1935.

There was an article in the latest FlyPast…no photos, but it said it won’t be a complete aircraft…just fuselage and inner wings.

I read something recently about a group trying to locate one of the Boeing Clippers too, which had crashed somewhere. That would be great to see revived.

Mind you the photos, coupled with family memories and the modern replica would make a great book and/or documentary story to tell.

According to a wire service story I saw it sounds like not much remains (remember the plane is wood and it’s been in salt water for 70-odd years).
The family left a marble plaque at the underwater wreckage site. They don’t seem to be interested in a recovery.
Of course with an award winning recreation, why bother?..(especially if there isn’t anything useable down there).

who’s gonna wax lyrical about twin-engined flying boats? 😀
Seriously though, what sort of condition is the wreck in?, any photos?, etc.
