Simon Dee the “king” of TV in the 1960’s before he vanished from sight has died today, aged 74, after a short illness suffering from bone cancer.
I got to know Simon fairly well some years ago and was in touch with him quite often as he was then HUGELY interested in the Battle of Britain. His favourite book was “Battle of Britain Then & Now” and he was fascinated in the story of Billy Fiske and played around with the idea of a book or radio documentary on Fiske. Once or twice he came along on our “digs” on 1940 wrecks and was truly dedicated to his own personal remembrance of “the Few”.
An ebullient, flamboyant and not always popular individual with the public at large (and certainly with the BBC!) he had a very different side to him when engrossed in things related to the Battle of Britain.
RIP Simon.
