Sixty Years Ago Today

It was on 6th December 1957 that the Lockheed Electra II made its maiden flight. This one is still flying with Buffalo Airways.

I heard that KLM pilots reckoned the Electra handled like a fighter . Rode on them Heathrow-Schiphol and Schiphol-Le Bourget a couple of times..KLM’s ‘Neptunus’ went to Martinair briefly https://abpic.co.uk/pictures/view/1001537

In 1967 I’ve made four flights with KLM in a Lockheed L-188C Electra, of which two in the magnificent roomy cockpit. Fantastic and beautiful aircraft!

Even though the type is being replaced in USN service by the 737-based P-8, there are still many P-3s in service.
I see Whidbey Island ships shooting approaches the local air base.

Any fire fighting P-3s in use since Aero Union closed?
I think there are some in western Canada.

Remarkable to think that the P-3 Orion still flies, as derived from this original design. In fairness the last Orion came off the production line in 1990. Something to be said about the endurance of the design however, that it was sufficiently ‘future proofed’ in 1957 to provide a solid platform for maritime patrol duties long after it ceased being usable as an airliner.

I’m still annoyed with myself for not persevering longer in the queue to get on board an Orion at the Maltese airshow this year.
