Hi all, got a couple of questions about Skegness air displays from the seventies:
1 – a mate of mine has a photo taken by her parents of her (aged two!) at Skegness in May 79 with five aircraft in formation in the background. I haven’t seen the photo yet, but I’m told their wings are straight and are quite far forward on the fuselage. Does anyone know of a formation team from 1979 which would fit that profile?
2 – while discussing that particular photo, I mentioned that there was a Lightning which went in (I think fatally) at a Skegness air display one year. Although on second thoughts it might be Scarborough… Either way, I’m sure it was a Lightning which went into the bay after getting a fast low pass wrong. Can anyone else shed any light on that one? Year, aircraft identity, pilot, etc?
Thanks in advance…
Steve

Without speculating and thus misleading, or causing offence, do we know what went wrong?

It’s during that particular aero’s display that I took the photo that you can see as my avatar…..:D
Have to say the aero’s display Mike did in this a/c at the BAe Families day at Hatfield (either just before or I think just after the IAT show) was one of the most awesome Lightning solos I had ever seen….:D
I seem to remember Mike had one of those great wartime fighter pilot handlebar moustache’s……..:D
Very sad way for it to end:(

a quick look through Martin Bowman’s “English Electric Lightning” gives:
“F3 XP753 Crashed into the sea off Scarborough 26.8.83, during unauthorised aerobatics. Flt Lt Mike Thompson, LTF, killed”
