Brisbane based airline SkyAirWorld, which folded spectacularly after the last of its five jets was repossessed over the weekend, owes creditors more than $40 million and has left 140 staff with little chance of getting their full entitlements.
The failure has left red-faced federal government officials scrambling to ensure the Cocos and Christmas islands still have an air service after reassuring the public as recently as two weeks ago that SkyAirWorld’s contract would go ahead.
The Government signed a contract with the carrier in January to provide services between the mainland and the Indian Ocean territories from next month.
A spokeswoman for the Attorney-General’s Department confirmed yesterday that the contract with the carrier was terminated on Monday.

Were they the ones operating the E-Jet from a Solomons islands based airline?
