Skydiving

Okay guys n gals, just thought i’d let you know that i’m taking part in ‘Leap for the Lifeboats 2006’, basically doing a skydive for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, a charity here in the UK and Ireland that runs Lifeboat stations all around the coast and inland in some areas (Thames and Norfolk Broads especially) and also beach rescue during the summer. Has anyone done skydiving before, and know what it’s like? I’m doing a 10,000 feet tandem skydive. Also, anyone know how I can get people to sponsor me online? Cheers, Rob

Why would you want to jump out of a perfectly good airplane

I’ve done it a few hundred times! Nothing to it once you get the first one out of the way! 🙂 😀 🙂

Man that was excellent, was scared as hell when going up in the plane, then when the door was opened and watched the two guys going before me jump right out of the plane scared me sh**less! Falling was the worst bit, then it was absolutely excellent, when the parachute was pulled my hearing went funny but still was really good, even the descent with the parachute was fun circling around. Should get the DVD on about Thursday as the camera has to be taken home to be put onto disc because the computers were destroyed. Only got this photo my mate took of me after I got back, pretty much sums it up though 😆

Cheers to everyone for your support and sponsoring me, definitely doing it again sometime!

Argh off to do the skydive in 45 minutes, should take about an hour and a half to drive there (probably an hour knowing my mates driving), then who knows how long until the jump. Cheers to everyone that’s supported and sponsored me.

Sorry I came to this thread late.

It is worth pointing out a bit about the RNLI.

The RNLI are a voluntary organisation who have provided rescue at sea services in the UK since 1824. All the crews, who risk their own lives saving others, are unpaid volunteers.

As Rob says they are a charity, the RNLI receives absolutely no funding from the government; all their income is from collection, donation and legacies.

If it is too late to support Rob on his skydive, then you can support the RNLI in other ways. Find out more at www.rnli.org.uk

Should be in at least two local Newspapers this week fingers crossed! Rang up and had an interview on the phone which went well. Been contacted by the Helmsman of Trearddur Bay lifeboat station, asking if I could give the money instead of to the RNLI, but directly to Trearddur Bay lifeboat stations fund for a new Atlantic 85 lifeboat, I don’t think I can but I want to do another dive later in the year specifically for Trearddur, at least that way i’ll know where the money is going!

That’s a bit of a shame you’re only allowed two spectators! Just make sure they’ve got cameras and videos etc!! (Anyone from the RNLI coming?)

Trouble with newspapers is they are very “of the moment” – maybe heckle them a bit nearer the date? You want to be current news.

Hi Rob,

Cheque went in the post last Thursday, with a first class stamp affixed!

It’s probably the Christmas mail system! 🙁

I’ve done a jump when I was in NZ.

The exciting part was going up in the plane, upto 12k, then shuffling over to the door -I was last up and this was a tandem jump, looking down seems strange as you don’t get a perspective on how high you are. I remember the instructor rambling on about keep your arms crossed and your legs bent right back. As soon as we left the plane I opened my arms which caused us to go into a little spin, but once the guide chute was open I settled down and got my bearings – it was calm even though the wind was blasting my face and the harness was tearing into my Sun burn.

I remember the instructor asking if I had contacts in, I said no so he slid my goggles off of my eyes. Smooth landing followed – still couldn’t force myself to do the bungy.

Good luck with it.
