SkyEurope Airlines, Central Europe’s leading low fare airline, announced it will enter the Polish market on 1 May 2004. “As we are already present in Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Croatia, our market entry in Poland is a natural move” said Alain Skowronek, SkyEurope Airlines’ Chairman.
SkyEurope will announce during a press conference in March its choice of a first Polish base. Several airports are being considered, which could result in the opening of several bases in Poland. “With 40 million inhabitants, Poland is the largest market to join the EU, but remains so far underserved by low cost airlines. We will introduce a choice of popular destinations with one-way fares from PLN 99” said Christian Mandl, SkyEurope Airlines’ CEO
Flights from Warsaw to Budapest and Vienna-Bratislava starting from 1 May 2004 can already be booked.
“Our investment in Poland will be significant,” added Christian Mandl, “we intend to base several aircraft and to invest USD 20 million to develop our operation.”
SkyEurope became the first low cost airline to carry His Holiness Pope John Paul II during his official visit to Slovakia in September 2003.

For some reason there seems to be a low cost “explosion” in Central and Eastern Europe lately especially with this news alongside Air Polonia’s and Wizz Air’s expansion!
