Skyraider AEW1 radomes

Other than the 2 at Yeovilton does anyone know if any radomes exist for the Skyraider AEW1, the reason I ask is that someone is attempting to put an ex FAA/Swedish Skyraider back to AEW fit but do not have a radome for it. One thought is that a Gannet or Shackleton one would also fit once the correct attatchment points have been changed. I wonder if any survived as fish ponds after they were removed from the FAA aircraft at SAL before going to Sweden, ok I know its a stupid idea, but stranger things have happened.

Peter
The one from Flambards is the spare example outside Cobham Hall, mentioned in the thread above

What happened to this one at Flambards 1986?

And a picture of the Shackleton as she is now, sans radome…

Its funny you should ask that question because when reading the recent data file on the Skyraider AEW in a recent Hairoplane monthly magazine it mentioned that the radar and radome for the new Gannet AEW’s were supplied by the outgoing Skyraiders. If indeed true that may mean that these radomes have had quite an interesting carreer in themselves having been attached to three classic planes.

Anyone fill in the gaps please?

Filling in the gaps, I had a look at the Shackleton radome at Baginton today, and sure enough the plates inside state that it is for use on a Gannet. Bearing in mind what @eroplane monthly says, this suggests that Shackleton and Skyraider radomes might be compatible in terms of general size and shape (although it seems unlikely that they would share the same mountings…)

And yes, it is rather big!

So, this still points to either Gannets or Shackletons as a possible source for a Skyraider AEW ‘dome. The plot thickens……. 😉

Seaking93.. check your PM’s 🙂

I might know more re: the radome at Baginton on Thursday, Sea King93, I will keep you posted. If it’s OK to ask, where is the Skyraider under restoration ?(bearing in mind the radome is a suprisingly bulky object to transport 😉 )

The Shackleton here at Coventry, and also the one at RAF St Mawgan have both been ‘retro’ modified and have lost their radomes, which do look very similar to the Skyraider mouldings. I could try to enquire re: the Coventry one, the ‘dome has been kept but I’m not sure if it is for sale /swap.

There’s the 2 x Shacks rotting in Cyprus, may be worth investigating them to see if that could be a possible source as well……???

I will see what I can find out, the AEW Skyraider is a fantastic looking aircraft, it would make a very distinctive flying ‘warbird’! Is there one on display at Yeovilton, or are they both in store?

I remember being very impressed by the example at Helston years ago, are there any plans for its future?

The type example is currently inside Cobham Hall and the one you saw at Helston is in external storage and not assembled, sadly it was damaged when on loan to 849NAS at Culdrose and then returned unrepaired to FAAM. At the moment this particular airframe is held as a spare example.
