Slant Combustors – Request

I saw a picture in a book a while ago on an early centrifugal turbojet development, where the combustors were placed at an angle to the axis of the jet engine i.e. not directed along the axis.

The combustors were placed at a slant angle so that the airflow from the top of the compressor did not have to make a complete 90 degree bend (see picture for example) to get to the combustor, but was something like 45 degrees, for better flow efficiency.

I have lost the reference, and any help on this would be appreciated.

It may have been a Fench or Italian development.

Thanks,

Steven

Motorlet_M701_turbojet

The engine I was origionally searching for was the Czech Motorlet M701 turbojet, as used in the L-29 jet.

The engine is a single-sided centrifugal front entry compressor with a single turbine stage. A bit like the DH Goblin with a Dart type combustor stage.

Dart and Clyde Skew Combustors

The RR Clyde had skewed combustors as well.

Dart

Thanks.

I hadn’t realised the turboprop Dart had the slant combustors, as I was sure that the example I had seen was a turbojet.

There appear to be three reasons for the slant combustors:
i) reduce the overall engine length
ii) provide a straighter path for the air from the compressor into the combustors
iii) since the combustor gases emerge at an angle, they can be directed straight onto the rotating turbine, thereby eliminating the stator stage

Any others reasons?

Other slant combustor examples appreciated.

I’ve long thought that the Dart was like that to reduce it’s overall length – but that’s all it was, a thought.

Do you mean like a Rolls-Royce Dart?
