slides

a quick question for our photography experts out there…

is it possible to have slides scanned to produce digital images? If so any idea where I may get it done/cost as I’ve recently found a few boxes of slides (nothing much exciting for you lot, just airliners at Heathrow in 1979/80)

Tom,

It might be a statement of the obvious, but a great many inexpensive flat bed scanners have slide adapters. They might not be up to the quality of a dedicated professional film scanner, but for images to be posted on the web and forums like this they are easily good enough.
As an example, the attached picture (from the 1968 Biggin Hill air fair) was scanned in on an Epson 2480 that cost me about £60 a couple of years back. The original image of about 222kb has been reduced to 36kb or so for posting, and I’ve retiouched most of the dust out, but otherwise it’s straight out of the box, so to speak.
Looks like they’re going for £40 or so on eBay now.
If you want a full-resolution copy of the scane let me know in a PM.

Neil,

Thanks, but I don’t think I can compete with others here, in any way.

The 2800Z is fine, the only problems I have is that a couple of pixels have gone in the view finder (not a big problem at all) and autofocus is next to useless. To fix the focus, you have to hold the shutter button halfway down. It takes about 2 seconds to autofocus, which no good for moving objects.

There is a newer model now – which available at the price I paid for the 2800Z. However, I don’t think autofocus is improved, but top resolution 50% or more higher.

Take a look at my review on , CIAO – sorry about any popups, but their not too bad.

I also have reviews on Dooyoo and Consumer Reviews.

thanks for that chaps..

looking at a couple of sites out of the the backof a magazine(!) the cost per slide is between 55p and 65p per slide at either 800 or 1000 DPI… I go down that route for a couple to see how they come out then look at investing in a scanner…

RobAnt… looking at yr site I see that you use a Fuji Finepix 2800.. pictures look good to me… had any probs with it as I’ve seen then advertised for good price recently.

Many scanners come with slide converters included in the package – at least many from HP

Yes it is possible.

Prices vary wildly, and Jessops / Boots are good reference points. I would suggest trying them for a quote, then buying Amateur Photographer / Practical Photography magazine and checking out the advertisers – or do a websearch.

The alternative is to buy your own scanner.
