Looking on the web today for pics of the FNS Vendemiaire and I saw her in port with a smaller ship that had a helo deck and it got me wondering, what is the smallest ship with a helo hangered on it?
And what helo could it operate? A single engined Squirrel?maybe not since it doesn’t fold in the tail.

The two corvettes will be released now:

Next are the 2 Italian designed modified Assad / Wadi M’ragh class ships built for but never delivered to Iraq (675 tons). Story

KJ: mate the only problem with those rounded hangars is the amount of room you have to move in them.
Yes, I prolly overstated that those hangars would fit a Sea Sprite :p
But a Sea Linx should fit nicely. The problem with the tight working space remains, of course.
On the 140 without the hanger, the Box just above the guys head, is that some sort of optics?
Same take on this as Wanshan already posted, some sort of landing aid or some sort of video survilaince for the landing ops, likely.

The boxy thing is quite common on helicopter equiped frigates. I’don’t know exactly what it is but am guessing that it is some sort of landing aid.

KJ: mate the only problem with those rounded hangars is the amount of room you have to move in them. As you can see in the pic with the helo, there really isn’t much room to move once your covered, this hampers maintanence work, especially if they have to pull the enging and replace it. Square ones at least allow room to move and rig pulleys for such complex operations.

Meko 140 with and without telescopic hangar.
Closer look at the hangar, and a Fennec on board of P44. Here the telescopic hangar can be seen, and its not boxi like the one on the italian Lupo, but rather rounded, like a corrugated sheet shelter, only the door frame being squared.

Thanks guys, is there a Canadian warship with a telescopic hanger?
By: Wanshan - 27th April 2005 at 20:08
This company makes telescopic hangers http://www.indaltech.com/products/structures/structures.htm
Anyone know what ship this is?
That’s an Italian Lupo class frigate. Below is half-sister ‘Soldati’ class, 4 originally built for Iraq and taken over by the Italian navy.
On the right is the telescopic hangar used on Italy’s Nuove Unità Minori Combattenti (NUMC) a.k.a “Comandanti” class.

It’s an italian warship: red hull number, albatros system and 76mm otomelara.
I would say a Lupo mod.
You beat me to it…

King Jester: Mate any old ship could support a Schweizer helo, there’s litterally nothing to them, you’d do more damage throwing a piece of paper on the deck than one of those things 😉

What I always find interesting is the idea of teloscopic hangers like what the Russians have on some of their ships, IIRC the Lurssen ships used by the UAE have this function, I may be wrong about that though.
With 90 mts length and 1800 tons displacement they are outside the scope of the topic, but argie MEKO 140´s of the second batch have telescopic hangars. I had the info that these hangars are of cannuck design, but may be wrong. The hangars are spacy enough for an Alluette or Fennec (none of ´em having a collapsible tailboom), so even bigger specialized naval helos (Sea Linxs, may be even Sea Sprite) should fit, altought I´m unsure about the landing pad beeing safe for a Sea Sprite.
What about Jaques Cuosteau CALLYPSO? Under 450 tn (TON minehunter) could support* a Schweizer helo AND two minisubs. Now thats impressive!!
* I know, I know…only landing pad, no hangar.

Well now this is interesting, the K-130 class that is being built now is actually being marketed as UAV ready with two UAV’s capable of being deployed in place of the helo. I ecpect we’ll see more of this in the future, or even one uav and one helo.

From what I have seen, the Visby’s are to have the helo in a standard hanger aft of the bridge, though I do remember there some talk about a lift lowering the helo down into a hanger below. How big are the new OPC’s that the RNZN are getting? They have a helo on board?
By: Wanshan - 27th April 2005 at 08:05
They are only 620t and are to get hangars fitted below the helicopter deck IIRC.
Yep, I think they together with the Lurssen craft are the smallest helicopter carrier combattants that have (or are planned to have – see 26 in pic below) a hangar and support facilities. Next are the 2 Italian designed modified Assad / Wadi M’ragh class ships built for but never delivered to Iraq (675 tons). Story

Visby is in no way small, think tiny mate

Steve: thanks for the link, I’ve been looking for it for a long time, it doesn’t come up on any search down here.
MPA: Mate that looks like it’s been added on after and covered with canvas, how odd. But that helo couldn’t be permanently deployed to that ship surely, the tail sticks out, they couldn’t close the hanger off from the elements should the need to work on the tail section and it’s raining.

Radar: interesting, they are more what I am looking for to answer my question, 630t is tiny, but are the helos permanently deployed? Is there a hanger for them?
By: Arabella-Cox - 27th April 2005 at 02:35
The Visby class corvettes will carry helicopters.
