I try to help if I can and do not try to run anyone down, some seem to take pleasure in it though.

Thank you all for your discussion points.

There are the majority of forumites who are polite, courteous, and respect their fellow man. As encapsulated in the above replies many of our fellows wish to inform and direct. Lack of comma’s, reflect a changing world. We should embrace, inform on the past and get a life.

It is those of short tempers and lack of empathy that annoys me. I have seen the concern for a 16 yr old who is struggling with the forum. Personally, having being taught by my grandchildren, I would have thought that this age group could run rings about us oldies.

Next comes a considered request without the full information that the requester has. How sensible to get an unbiased reply, only to be lambasted by one and all including people that control this site. Not a good advert.

I do fervently believe we should revert to our Victorian ancestors values, no matter how invisible or anonymous we are, we should be respectful, honest and sympathetic to our fellow man, no matter their background. This will only generate a caring and thoroughly informative forum.

Surely this is what we all want.

Apart from the death threat 😮 made against me here a good few years ago now, I’ve found the forum to be a very helpful place. I’ve learned an awful lot, both about the history I cherish and about the kindness of the human spirit. In turn, I hope I have been able to give a little bit back.

Compared with some of the self centered , sanctimonious , self rightious basterds on some of the sites I am on ” The Aviation Forum ” is a delight to use !!

And you are quite correct the ” Search ” button on most Forums , is but a joke .

I have been on this forum for around 9 years now and always have found it a valuable place to go to. However there is a risk of it becoming a so called gentlemans club or “Clique” and sarcasm does not help. If something should be seen as a joke maybe it should clearly be shown as so.

Its worth remembering that a forum needs new members to keep going, without that its a dead duck. I would like to see more tolerance to new members and help given instead of sarcasm. This can be a great place to come to with some members having such great expertise,skills,information etc to share.

Lets keep this forum as a friendly place and a successful one to be involved in.

I have to say I’m getting a bit bored with the apostrophe debate.

There needs to be a bit more tolerance for peoples different takes on the English language; we are all different, and unless we know the other person’s circumstances, it is quite wrong to pick up on every single little misdemeanour.

I correct little mistakes when I see them – saves time later!

It happens in all forums – you have the helpful and the not so helpful. The “not so” tend to append the link to the relevant thread with some sarcastic followup which usually sends the person asking away thinking that all the forum members are as brusque.

Not really related to the OP (or this forum) but this was sometimes posted when a new member obviously failed to do even one bit of ‘research’…

Another big problem is that type cannot convey emotion in the same way as the spoken word, a message that is meant in a light hearted jokey way can be taken very seriously and cause offense when it is not intended to.

All too easy to forget that not everyone thinks the same way as I (or you) do and will do things or react differently to something.

“Point scoring” seems to have taken over from ‘politeness’.

It’s too easy to tell someone who you are never likely to meet, that they
shouldn’t be lazy and search for the info they want.

Rather than perhaps put a link up and say, “this might be
what you are after”.

Then as I mentioned elsewhere : When there is an aircraft accident or
incident, everyone telling us what we should or shouldn’t be saying or
thinking doesn’t help matters.
That should be left to forum moderators, not all and sundry trying to earn
some brownie points.

Even if it upsets the forum pecking order.

personaly my expirence does not lie with computor stuff. i use one finger to tap away and get there in the end. im no expert when it comes to delving into the depths of of something where i cant physicaly turn the page over.

expert or not, i ask and and leave it up to some one who know`s better to come back with the answer. yes on the rare occasion there are one or two plebs that come back with the ” didnt you know that” attitude but never mind

people come to me from all over the world to get me to repair, paint or do some arty stuff for them through my business but i have to be polite even to the idiots, its because my name and reputation is at stake.

those who have nothing to lose will often say things off the cuff that will often offend somebody somewhere at some point

I have no issue with asking for a bit more tolerance on the forum, but that too works both ways.

The search function is working now, but as inkworm says, you need to be clear on what you are asking. There are over 10 years worth of threads now, and that can be a lot of information to sort through. Older users will know what to look for, particularly if they have been involved with a thread in the past.

So, my advice is that if a newer member asks the well discussed question, then perhaps some of us could help with a succinct reply, and link to a suitable thread if possible.

I see no reason for rudeness.

The problem with search functions on forums is getting the terms right for the results, I’ve looked more than once for a thread that I know has existed but not been able to find it, however there are those who are too lazy to look up stuff, it’s a double edged sword.

What ever you do you can’t please all the people all the time.

There should be more tolerance and guidance and there should also be respect and politeness.
Because you don’t really know who you are in discussion with, it seems that rudeness and insult are somehow OK. Well, they aren’t.
