Smith Autopilot Gyroscope

Probably an easy one for the experts….I’ve been shown a ‘Type A gyroscope’ unit , black, size of a large cooking pot, clear acrylic?? lid, full of electronics, marked also Mark 10 Autopilot …S.Smith and Sons…what period aircraft would it be for?…the owner thought a Vulcan, I thought a bit earlier…MTIA
