Smoking – an issue

Did anyone else watch the programme on BBC2 about smoking last night?

It was basically about people’s love-affair for the cigarette, the impact of smoking on people, and associated health risks/costs. It was really in-depth and interesting (well at least I thought so!). Did you know that the tobacco industry is worth $430 billion, and that around the world approx $1.2million is spent on ciggerettes each day! 😮

Lets have a discussion about smoking and its impacts on people and health.

And, if you are smoker, can you answer the following questions:

1. What do you smoke (cigarettes, roll-ups, cigars, pipe, etc.)
2. How many do you smoke in a day?
3. Why do you smoke?
4. Have you tried to quit?
5. What is the longest time you have ‘quit’ for?
6. If you could of put all the money you have used for smoking towards another cause, what would you have done with it?

i do not want to start a argument over smoking. i am a smoker and i do agree banning smoking in certain places like public transport and certain pubs. but a total all out ban in public is ridiculas, what is wrong in pubs and clubs having a smoking room like they used too, is there going to be a total ban on mobile phones in public or 2 days a week ban all non important cars from the roads…… most people stand back and watch us completley destroy our planet. it is such a huge issue this banning smoking in public but noboby gives a toss about the rain forest being cut down or the polar ice cap melting. also i think taking away somebodys right to smoke is the same as taking away someones right to eat and drink in public… i mean fatty foods can kill you right.. and on the passive smoking issue… what about all these cars and lorries on the roads and factorys belching out pollution.. are we going to ban them as well…..

If it didn’t affect other people indirectly then carry on by all means. And yes you are right to highlight those other issues that require our attention too. 😀

As I understand it, the Scottish parliament have plans to banish fatty foods, junk foods and confections from schools in order to combat childhood obesity. I also heard about a local authority who is withdrawing free school buses for kids within a certain distance, who’d be better off walking there and back.

I don’t know where we’re at at the moment in terms of developing cleaner fuels and propellants, but the sooner we cut that crap out too, the better.

Hi
I am an EX SMOKER (40) per day and I have Not smoked for two years. Since I stopped smoking I realise that along with Car Drivers , Smokers are the most VICTIMISED PEOPLE in this country. I dont think I would have giver up if I was not going for an OP requiring a GA but I have to admit that I have more cash now and my Wife had threatened me with a HORRIBLE FATE if I start smoking again.????

My name is galdri and I smoke  In fact I smoke about 5 cigars (the small variety) a day, but if it is a bad day maybe 10. I started smoking out of boredom 5 years ago, at the ripe old age of 28 😮 At least when I was smoking my cigar, another 10 minutes of complete and utter bordom were and over done with. And the thing is, I liked it from the first puff. This is an addiction that is probably in our genes. My father used to smoke (He quit 25 years ago), my grandfather smoked, my great grandfather smoked etc. I’ve never tried to quit, because I like this thing. Ok, Ok, I know! It will kill me ( or so the doctors say), but I can think of so many thing that will kill me, without me ever getting near another cigar again (how about getting pissed and ending up with a less than reputable lady). Hell, my smoking grandfather lived to be 98 years old before he passed away!

Having said that, however, I’m all for the ban on smoking in certain public places. The work place should, ofcourse be smoke free. All public transport should be smoke free. All restaurants should be smoke free. But Pubs? Well, there I would like to have a designated smoking room.

Well, you’ve got something of a point about non-essential car jouneys. However, if you’re living in a rural part of the country, served by a bus service offering a bus every one or two hours with the nearest bus stop a quarter of a mile away, you may be forgiven for buying a second hand car.

For many in rural parts, a car is pretty neccessry, esp for work purposes.

It would be interesting to see how far the government would push the smoking issue.A pastime that’s been around for several hundred years.I hate the idea of a nanny state adults are old enough and hopefully mature enough to decide whether or not to smoke. The refusal of treatment of smokers on the NHS is diabolical seen as they pay the tax on their habit.

Sea Vixen, there’s no such thing as passive weight gain from seeing eating a man eating a full English. As for lorries and cars, one can argue that at least a motor vehicle produces pollution as a negative by – product of useful activity. What useful activity (other than an enjoyable high) does smoking generate???

when i see someone eating a full english… i want one.. you know the smell of the bacon and that… so in a way that is passive weight gain.. 😀 😀 😀

if they stopped all non-essential car journeys there wouldent be half as many on the roads. some people i know will drive to the shop 200 yards from there house to get a pint of milk…

i do agree in a way with you but other peoples cars kill non-drivers.. but i cant see people shouting BAN CARS.. by the way i am a cautious smoker, i do not light up eny where, if i am with a group of non-smokers i wont smoke, my girlfriend is pregnant, i will not smoke near her. smokers today are almost labelled as someone who dont care about other people.. its not true in most cases…

Im an ex smoker,i know the worst type. But my dad, granddad and nan plus assorted aunts and great uncles, all have died through smoking related illnesses .Even when i smoked we sat in none smoking while flying, i never lit up in restaurants and even sat on the outside step at home(not fair an the rest of a none smoking family).I dislike and find smoking around my boys ignorant ,the smokers have a choice my kids don’t.
As for the weed issue its legalisation will only depend on a accurate road side test.

There was a mojor government study out this week in the U.S. that strongly condemed “second hand” smoke…raising the possibility of even more states and localities banning public smoking.
Workplace smoking is already banned in all government offices and most workplaces…a some states have bans in effect for resturants/bars/clubs.
Basically, the report said that other people’s smaoke kills non-smokers and it’s especially harmful if parents smoke in a home or auto with young children.

I’m sorry if I offend anyone…but anyone who started smoking in tha last 40 years (that is since the first strong research came out) is very foolish.
There are enough dangers to our health out there (cancer, heart, ALS, MD, etc, etc.) without adding another large threat.

You’ll enjoy the public smoking ban when it hits England & Wales. Here in Scotland, despite all the initial moaners and groaners (mainly publicans) it’s gone down unexpectedly well, especially amongst those of us who like to eat out.

Pubs are reporting increased trade from diners, family groups and people like me who don’t like to have to wash their clothes every time they’ve entered a licensed premises.

Down with the nasty fags I say, down with ’em !
