Snow affecting Some UK airports

Just another blanket of snow and the UK comes to a hault!

All Flights Cancelled At Manchester Airport

David Williams, Sky News Online
The travel plans of thousands in the North of England have been delayed after Manchester Airport cancelled all its flights because of the severe weather.

All planes are expected to remain grounded for up to an hour while snow and ice are cleared off runway one – the only runway being used over the Christmas period.

A spokesman denied earlier reports which said the airport had closed.

But he confirmed one flight had to be redirected to Birmingham airport earlier.

“We are not closed at the moment – just clearing snow from runway one,” he said.

“We lost a flight coming back from Qatar this morning which went to Birmingham Airport because of the snow fall this morning.

“But the airport is still open and there will be a further update after 12pm.”

And his house mate must be an idiot.

He lives with Spalding, he’s already proved he’s an idiot.

For a country so obsessed with the weather we really are useless at dealing with it.

Snow, rain, cold, heat, wind… anything seems to grind us to a halt these days. I think it’s more to do with how defeatest we have become as a nation.

The scandinavians would laugh if they saw us at the moment, they just dig their way out and get on with it.

Yes that is quite true but there are two reasons for it. Firstly we have to accept that we cannot afford to invest in the levels of snow clearance equipment other countries can justify because their exeperience of snow is so much more frequent. Secondly we are ruled by “Elf ‘n’ Safety, m’lud and so cannot afford the endless cases for compensation by every worker who tore his trousers, bruised his bum, cut his arm, etc etc due to accidents in the snow and ice.

In the thick snow of 1971 ( I think it was ) in a small hamlet in Cambridgeshire the post, milk, groceries and bread were delivered, the village shop never closed not did any local schools despite several power cuts. Children wore wamer clothing and candles were an adventure. Buses didn’t run until roads were cleared so people walked.

MAN definitely closed at various points during Sunday afternoon. Some quite interesting chat on the scanner. It would appear that they would shut for 45mins to clear the active runway only to be hit with a heavy snow shower as it was about to re-open. Problems also with T-Storms in the vicinity of DAYNE and ROSUN affecting holding. Most aircraft seemed to be being sent south to TRENT for the hold.

Yea, as has been said before, its quite poor how we handle bad weather situations in the U.K. We dont have the equipment for these events, but for the low number of times were hit, it would be hard to justify to the bean counters the expense of buying anything too advanced.

There are so many times I’ve thought exactly the same! If you go to Canada or Norway in the winter when they have massive amounts of snow, things just carry on pretty much as normal. We actually are rubbish at it!

And according to various national tv news reports I watched yesterday us “plucky jocks of North Britainshire” are used to snowy weather and therefore deal with it better… Er… still no snow here. 😀
