Snowy Duxford 18th December 2009

Whilst the country ground to a halt, life goes on at Duxford…
Pleasantly serene, except the BBMF Chipmunk having an engine run.

She has to have both wing tips removed to be able to fit inside the T2.. hence why she spends most of the year outside. Although i believe its actually because the doors won’t open enough rather more than the span of the hangar.

Just normal winter maintenance. Back outside when finished.

Life doesn’t always carry on at Duxford. Myself and some friends went on the 19th, and they closed all the hangars except Airspace. Most annoyed. Apparently, 1/2 inch of snow was too big a Health and Safety risk to let people walk on a flat field, and the usual £16 entry fee obviously isn’t high enough to afford a bag of road grit to spread around the pathways. I made the most of the exhibits in Airspace, but really wanted to see all the airworthy aircraft in bits undergoing winter maintenance.

I went to Hendon the following day and couldn’t have had a better day if I tried. Everything was open, friendly and helpful staff, staff out gritting the site and it was free.

Normally a big fan of IWM, but you let me down this time.

It’s hard to take a bad picture of a VC-10 but this one is very nice. Good stuff.

Lovely tranquil photos Roobarb, especially the chipmunk. At least I can now tell my Girlfirend how to make me feel festive – put a running piston engine in the picture. Thanks for posting.
