[updated:LAST EDITED ON 27-12-02 AT 09:08 PM (GMT)]Ahaaaaaa! A flight sim thread!
Time for me to voice my preference for ‘Aces High’. This has been running since 1999 and is marketed mainly as an online flight sim. That is, you merely download about 25mb of stuff comprising of the ‘default’ terrain, drone P51s to practice on, and all the aircraft.
What then? Well, it’s really for gamers who want to play online, so you can either go H2H for free in one of about 5-10 ‘combat rooms’ hosted by a player (who can select terrain type and aircraft preference, as well as sometimes some cunning programming to launch you, say from 5000′ for instant combat), or you can stump up about £10 a month and access the online arenas. These can each take from 150 to 500 players, I usually see about 150 players online at once. The Main Arena has a set piece battle with specific objectives etc, but there are also set-pieces which recreate major air battles of WWII. Here you will see squads (Squadrons)from all over the world taking part. I recently saw an amazing screen shot of 11 Lancs from IX Sqn in formation, all pilots online and on their way to blast the hell out of somewhere!
There are loads of bulletin boards (about 20 on the constructors site alone) covering everything from downloadable sounds to handling characteristics to online combat footage, and also loads of other websites covering all sorts of stuff.
It seems that this game is not as graphically advanced as CFS3 (it is 3 yrs old and looks it), but concentrates instead on ironing out game bugs and geting good flight modelling on the aircraft which you fly – a new patch with latest planes and bug ironouts needs to be downloaded every 4-6 months. Apparently a few WWII pilots fly online, as well as Robert Shaw!
I know that online sims are not everybodys cup of tea, and certainly in the H2H arenas you occassionaly get the odd tosser, but they are ejected fairly quickly and on the whole there are alot of decent gamers who will help newbies. As I’m building up my skills on type I choose to go H2H only at the moment.
I recommend this game to anyone who wants to fight with players from around the world and who would perhaps eventually like to join a squadron, even if it might feel off being part of an FAA unit full of Americans! (hi US buddies!)
Those sceenshots from IL2 and CFS look awesome, by the way.
Edited because my proof reading is c**p.

Sounds like something I’ll enjoy, and with three P-40 models I’ll be satisfied. Nothing like the 1,200 horses in the V-1710 on the beautiful P-40M. 🙂

“The only problem with IL2 is, once you try it you will not go back to CFS1,2 or 3!!!”
Somehow I don’t see that as too much of a problem. I’d rather play ‘Pong’ the original video game with two bats and a ball than touch CFS3 again. I’ll keep my eyes open for the new IL2 game, sounds like 20 quid well spent.
I do have the ‘Just Flights’ Mosquito Squadron add-on for CFS2 and that makes a perfectly decent game. Especially the sound of the Merlins that has been captured really well 🙂
Best wishes all

RE: So flight-sims are for kids right? Wrong! Zerstorer anyone!!!
Forgotten Battles is being released as a whole new flight sim.
Everything has been tweeked so they couldn’t release it as a patch.
I believe it will cost around £20 but believe me it is well worth is.
The only problem with IL2 is, once you try it you will not go back to CFS1,2 or 3!!!

Merry Christmas to you too Pawnee. You’ve brighten my day a good bit with this information. Tell me….is Forgotten Battles and add-on or a whole new game or what? Can you load the P-40’s up with external fuel tanks or bombs?

RE: So flight-sims are for kids right? Wrong! Zerstorer anyone!!!
The only thing that Il-2 lacks is a flyable P-40. The Russians used them a lot, and despite the P-39 being more popular with them, the P-40 should still be included. Yet again, the Warhawk gets a bad deal. 🙁

It’s okay Phantom, I didn’t regard your comments as an ‘outburst’ mate! I’ve had a quick check, and sure enough, there’s at least one P40 available to download for Fighter Squadron!
Munnst, I’ve tried ‘IL2’, and can tell you that with ALL the available patches, plane packs, terrain packs, base packs, etc, etc etc, ETC, (ad infinitum, ad absurdum!) FS still rules! It’s kinda like a well-kept secret though!

Yes but a poxy stuttering game in 3D is still a poxy stuttering game right? It’s just cost you another 100 dollars.
CFS3 looks great, some screen shots I’ve seen are magnificent. But that’s all it is, an eye-candy demonstration.
Somewhere along the line they dropped playability and authenticity in the corporate shredder.

Ok…this is going to sound like a shameless plug…and it is. Go to edimensional.com they have a wonderful pair of “plug and play” 3D glasses that bring Flight Sims ALIVE. The graphics in MSFS2002 are breathtaking…as are MSCS2 and 3 …IL2 is supposed to be better than the graphics enhancment on the microsoft sims (IL2 is a christmas present this year!) With a big enough monitor I would gather that a slight motion sickness could be had depending on your settings level. It is impossible to get a screen shot…but I assure you, you will be astounded. Flying MSCS3 in a Mossie with those Merlins humming outside the cockpit look as though you can reach out and touch them. Tracers spray way out in the distance and make gunnery sooo much more realistic. Winter in Ohio makes flying the real thing sporadic at best…and I have found a great way to save on Avgas!!! www.edimensional.com have a look…it is amazing $100

Oooops!
Think I meant IL2.
An IL76 combat sim would be quite something.

RE: CFS3 for Xmas? – Think again
CFS3 is so bad that even Microsoft have finally admitted they will need to issue a patch for it (First time ever for a MS flight sim I believe).
One or two people can actually get it to run without terrible stuttering in sound and vision – most cannot. It doesn’t seem either to be anything to do with the spec of your system.
But even if you can get it to run you end up with:
The world’s most useless computer controlled wingmen. You might be level bombing the target, they will dive bomb regardless. The fighter guys aren’t much better.
Solid cast iron bridges that can be taken out with 20mm cannon – not that this affects the game, the enemy trucks still drive over them.
Destroyers that can be sunk with 20mm
The ability to man the turrets in bombers, but with virtually no ability to aim correctly.
A German fleet that runs into thousands of ships parading up and down off the Isle of Wight in 1943
It’s a crock of poo. Don’t touch it until we see what the eventual ‘patch’ (I would guess 25 – 40 Mb) achieves.
Moggy.
Wish I’d bought IL76 🙁

RE: So flight-sims are for kids right? Wrong! Zerstorer anyone!!!
Sorry for the outburst Lancman. That was rather rude of me. I just am rather irritated that Microsoft has not included the P-40 in ANY of their THREE different World War II flight simlulations. They can include aircraft that never entered service, aircraft that had minimal impact on the war, but not a fighter that was, in my opinion anyway, vital to Allied victory in World War II. The P-40N would have been perfect for CFS2, but no, they just don’t want to include it.
