Just had an email from the CAA with amendments to the current quarter mil chart.
Some famous and evocative airfield names disappearing.
These are changes since this map came out just over a year ago.
DISUSED AERODROMES
Delete the following sites in toto – they are no longer visible from the air and therefore of no navigational use.
CHELVESTON at 521816N 0003157W (retain “Aerials” annotation)
GRAVELEY at 521546N 0001130W
LINDHOLME at 533312N 0005757W
POLEBROOK at 522753N 0002315W
TWINWOOD FARM at 521056N 0002927W
STRADISHALL at 520755N 0003044E
WARBOYS at 522339N 0000551W
WORKSOP
Delete all reference to runway at disused aerodrome at 531936N 0010351W
SWANTON MORLEY – delete civil aero site at 524344N 0005739E with a site elevation of 155ft amsl.
Do not show as disused
SPEKE – runways at disused aerosite deleted
Delete all reference to the runways at 532034N 0025253W – retain disused circle symbology
HETHEL – site now closed – change symbology at 523346N 0011024E from civil aerosite to disused. Also remove elevation. Note: change runway pattern on 1:250,000 charts – active runway 06/24 should be changed to solid disused and 17/35 deleted in toto.
Had a browse round on multi map, the removal of Chelveston is particularly impressive. I thought this was open until relatively recently? I don’t know why they want the aerial annotation leaving on; I think they have gone as well. I struggled to find Polebrook, and I was surprised to see the runways gone at Lindholme, when did they go?

UK added 560 airfields, Sept,’38-Sept,’46: how many do we need now? Does it help, that the military conversion of this land served its purpose, in disposing of the King’s enemies, so that reversion now to some peaceful activity is a vindication of what its ghosts sought?

My heart bleeds when see what has been done to RAF Binbrook. When it closed down, nothing was touched until the married quarters were sold off. Then the yobs moved in. The officers mess was wrecked, air traffic control was torched. I had an idea of making a small scale model of the station as it was, but getting plans or drawings is a no no. RAF Museum can’t help and ordnance survey can’t either, any ideas anybody?
