Moggy you should know that yes Maine is part of the USA but we are the most Norhtern State in the lower 48s which makes us one of the most independent States in the Union all you have to do is look at some of the laws we have in-acted.

From talking to my UK friends it’s clear that many (if not most) in the UK are wary of the EU. The UK government and public want to be part of a strong Europe but don’t want to give up too much sovereignty.

*A farmer friend in Kent (well educated, fairly liberal, and very well travelled, hardly a xenophobe) has nothing good to say about the EU agriculture programs and is sure France gives “illegal” incentives to its farmers.
*A lot of posters on this site are upset about the EU insurance rules that are raising warbird insurance rates. I dare say the average bloke would rather have the rules that affect him made in London rather than Brussels.
There is also concern about immigration….again, not many want open borders with countries that have a lot of people looking to move.
*France wants to be a (perhaps THE) major player in the EU, but still looks after its own interests first…withness deciding not to be a part of the Eurofighter program, instead wanting to develop its own fighter.
*The UK hasn’t adopted the Euro, and if for no other reason than tradition and pride, probably won’t in our lifetimes.

Looks to me like it’s time to “fish or cut bait”…in other words, decide which side of the fence you want to be on…because you can’t straddle it forever (at least not with out a sore a**).

I’m no great lover of the EU, and the current tactic of using the ‘Thatcher’ rebate to draw attention away from the referendum result in France is a bit transparent.

However at least we are independent and only loosely part of ‘United Europe’ – unlike Maine which is solidly locked into the American Union and has Bush as its leader :p

The comment made by Herr Schroeder that “germany has a habit of sticking to agreements etc” is a bit rich – the additional phrase “only when it suits them” should be added – particularly with regard to the stability pact
