Just for fun…..what have we all been doing with an aviation flavour? I took a couple of control columns to my parents to finish….will pop in a photo tomorrow….also been playing with the Merlins but it is oh so cold…..also farting about with the spitty!

wouldn’t it be great to have a aerosol of that smell!!
Oh yes … or perhaps one of those xmas-tree shaped car air freshners in ‘old aircraft cockpit’ scent 😀 Trouble is, the Mrs absolutely hates the smell. My study also has a faint whiff as that’s where I keep all my Vulcan panels and seats and my grip collection. The smell keeps her out of there which I suppose is a bonus :dev2:

Finished the Tempest stick and got one piston out the Merlin..
Opened up my Hunter F.4 cockpit yesterday whilst I was in the workshop (1st time since about September probably) – breathed in that smell of a real 1950’s aircraft, wound the clock, shut the canopy and went back in the house. It was so damned cold. 😮

Hey Merlin Pete,
Is that the literal “Merlin in the conservatory” you split with the missus over?!
Happy New Year.

Happy New Year.
Same conservatory, different Merlin.
The amazing thing isn`t that it caused my divorce, it is that the engine actually fits through a 2` 6″ doorway 😮

Is that your Fulmar engine Pete? Looks great :p
Thanks Elliott. Yes, it is, but I have temporarily assembled it onto a Merlin XX bottom-end, hence the lack of a Coffmann starter! This effectively makes it a Merlin III for the time being.
The original crankcase is still being repaired, and will be reunited with the engine eventually, the only example of a Merlin VIII that survives as far as I know, about 180 having been built exclusively for the Fulmar I.
It is a lovely engine. Unlike the XX which I run, where a lot of it was replaced, this one was all repairable except for the sump and coolant pump, and one rocker cover which was missing! It is hard to imagine it was excavated from the ground, it will make a perfectly good ground running Merlin.

Building this:
I really should have found something NON aviation-related for a change, but holidays are one of the few chances I get to play with my own stuff.
That`s my excuse anyway!

Thought I’d do some work on my start panel for the ‘Stang. Got the blueprint, printed it off, marked it all out, drilled the hole…a big one for the Mag switch…and the 4 little ones for the holding screws…..then noticed I’d printed off the wrong blueprint. Instead of a P-51 D start panel….. I’d printed one for P-51 B, and the Mag switch is in a different position.
Ar*e.
Got to do a whole new bl**dy panel now !!!.
Ho hum, at least the heater is now working in the workshop !.
