So, what will be the must see shows next year?

Only went to one show last year and that was Legends.

Fairford and Mildenhall have become too much like hardwork, most of the others are too modern.

Will probably check out Shuttleworth and Kemble.

Any little gems I should be aware of?

All Duxford shows and then Kemble for the Classic Jets show and later on in the year for the Delta Jets Fly-in. Air Atlantique’s show at Coventry will be a must as the last one was fantastic.
Just hope a few more P-51’s and a lot less Spitfires will turn out at legends.

If anybody is coming up to East Fortune then take the chance to nip over and see Gordon Douglas at East of Scotland Microlights ( on the western extension ) and get the chance to see all the dispersals , runways , admin buildings etc from the air , like Merlin says almost all of the old wartime buildings remain there.

Sorry Russell, havent been yet, and I must admit, my scanner doesnt come out of the box over here and I havent used my 600mm telephoto lens for the past couple of years.

I’m currently nurturing a few contacts to see if I can get in and get a close look at the two Shak’s parked up decomposing at Paphos. Its only a half hour drive from here but a very definate no picture policy is in place.

All I gotta do now is arrange to get back on a course or summat at the time Legends is on now, that way I dont have to pay for flights.

cheers

Hi Snapper

I’m planning on coming over to Legends this year and if I can I’d like to get to your memorial as well keep us informed of progress and the exact date.

I won’t know until a bit later this year my full agenda, the good lady hasn’t made up my mind for me yet.

But I plan to do Legends the first weekend and “Old Hay” in Kent the following.

Kind regards from a wind swept and very rain sodden Jersey

Moggy,

The Shuttleworth Sunset Displays.

What’s the best time to get to the airfield?
I’ve always been put off buy not knowing and wondering if when I get their it will be too crowded.
I like to get to displays nice and early.

Not sure if they will do it this year but last year they had a Proms Concert with flying. I’ve been to the Middle Wallop one and it was excellent, especially the IR night display by the Apache helicopters. (yes, they displayed in the dark!)

Ted.

RE: So, what will be the must see shows next year?

Guys if any of you can get up to Scotland this year then dont miss the museum of flights Festival of flight.

For those who dont know it. The airfield is authentic WW 2. 90% still intact. The aircraft dont land or take off there because of the farmer/safety to the crowd but turnhouse is only 40 mins by car and about 5 mins in a decent aircraft. For smaller aircraft there is a local strip which is only minutes away. We see regular sightings of the Se5a,Scottish Aviation Bulldog, pitts special, Extra 300, yak team,Hawker Hunter,BBMF, Reds,Utterly Butterly Barnstormers, ASK glider display, the RAF falcon parachute display team and the list goes on.

We have a broad range of aircraft from Great war to second world war to jet age to modern day aerobatics. The show is quite unique. It failed a little last year on the ground display but I think it was partly to do with Legends being on the same day. Hope its on a different day this year.

any way search for East Fortune on the web and have a look at their site. Well worth the read.

NOT BEEN TO FLYING LEGENDS!

I thought it was compulsory, or the law even, this is a bigger crime than plane spotting in Greece! (Leave it!!)

RE: So, what will be the must see shows next year?

For me the shows to visit in 2003 will have to be:

at least one Shuttleworth Evening Show, missed them all in 2002.

Lowestoft, not because of the spectacular demise of the odd Harrier, but there was some real variety at the 2002 show particularly on the classic jet front.

Little Gransden Children in Need Show as I’ve never been

Fly Past Fly In

Rougham, at least one of their events (who knows I may even have my car completed in time so as to show it at wings and wheels, although don’t hold your breath)

Any Fly In type event, or smallish show which may happen in East Anglia, as you can often get some interesting aircraft turn up there, plus there are some cracking aircraft based in the region now.

I’d like to be able to get to Kemble in 2003, rather a long treck but from what I hear well worth it.

Mildenhall, providing the crazy man in charge of America doesn’t manage to kick off too many wars between now and May.

I shall wait with interest the line up for Coventry, Duxford and Biggin Hill before making any plans.

I’m also planning a holiday to Florida, which by chance just happens to coincide with Sun and Fun.

Plus any display with a Yak 11

From the looks of the above I could be quite busy next year.

Er..

What ‘Coventry Bash’ would that be.

If Air Atlantique it is probably worth going, but not for me on account of the fact I used to work there but had to leave because of a fundamental disagreement with Mike Collett.

I agreed that I should like to stay working there…..

He disagreed 🙁

I take it by looking at the above that no one is going to the Coventry bash on 31May-1 June then?

Shame, you don’t know what your missing.

RE: So, what will be the must see shows next year?

Ah yes, the Lowestoft show. I too missed the crash. I was at work half a mile away, then leaving off to go home. I did, however, get the recovery. Boy did we all enjoy that saga! I run up to the roof for the fan driven warbirds, but twenty different sets of display teams gets really tedious. The Red Arrows are the only ones everyone in town cares about. And jets. Can’t stand the things.

Legends is 12th and 13th July (and on the 14th, I shall probably unveil the memorial I’m tryoing to organise for Johnny Wiseman 100 miles down the road if any of you are planning on hanging about!). I have no idea what the program is this year, but isn’t it ALWAYS superb?

Mildenhall – I want to go again after many years as my belly really needs to indulge in hot-dogs, Polish sausages, Hamburgers, and that crappy beer for breakfast. Sod the planes – what a feast!!!!! Osama deserves a kicking for making me starve, if nothing else.

RE: So, what will be the must see shows next year?

Moggy’s Guide

My “Must see” shows

Shuttleworth Sunset – May
Shuttleworth Sunset – June
Shuttleworth Sunset – July
Shuttleworth Sunset – Aug

Legends – July

No Mildenhall until 2005

At least one East Kirkby Lancaster Night Taxi Run

At least one Rougham Fly-in / Display

Everything else I consider either too far to travel or full of too many paraffin burners.

Funny, I genuinely envy those of us who can get some kick out of watching the jets. Now don’t get me wrong, you can’t beat an F86 or a Hunter if there are no props around, but if I have to live through another Harrier display I fear my lower intestine might make a determined attempt to throttle my brain as the only possible escape route. (I missed the Lowestoft Harrier display – don’t suppose they’ll build that into the programme for 2003 do you?)

Cheers,

Moggy

RE: So, what will be the must see shows next year?

When is Legends next year (2003)?.

So far I have not been able to get to one of these shows for one reason or another and thought it about time I did.

I used to go each year to the Fighter Meet and Great Warbirds but havent been to any now for some years. I’m not interested in Farnborough or Mildenhall or such like cos I’m not that fussed about jets (except a few and they dont fly anymore !) and tend to lean towards WW2 stuff…certainly sounds better I reckon.

Must save me pennies and try and do Oshkosh one day as well.

Cheers
