So which Fury is this ?

This picture was taken a few years back on one of those rare occasions when you can get inside the North Weald Hangars.

RE: N232J

Ah Ha, i have just realised both of my silly mistakes in picture ID.
I did not have the Fury picture full screen, so i could only see the Fury as far as the tailwheel, at which point the tail and wing of the Avenger looked at a glance like the Tigercat.I them mistakenly , again in haste, indentified the Wildcat as an Avenger, hence the remark about a Frech visitor(which indeed there has been in recent years to Duxford and not in USN Blue).
Time for bed me thinks !!

RE: N232J

It seems that wherever there’s a Sea Fury in my images, there’s always an Avenger somewhere in the background. πŸ™‚

I’m sure I have a pic of the OFMC Fury somewhere with a certain Blue airframe in the shot, strange πŸ™‚

RE: N232J

Umm, Tigercat and Avenger with wings folded, but not ‘George Bush’, this is a French visitor? or did it used to be Duxford based. Its the age you know !!! , grey matter getting muddled.

I wasn’t at the show myself, I was given the print by a friend.

Here is one show where both I and a Sea Fury attended!
Note what’s in the background πŸ™‚

RE: N232J

The wingtip smoke generators are called ‘smokewinders’ and were the invention of the late Frank Sanders.

RE: N232J

Good pic Stringbag, i would have been there at that show, must have missed the Fury out on the line. Incidentally, can you recall whether that is Tony Haig Thomas’s Avenger or the former ‘George Bush’ in the background. Is suspect the former as it lives there.

Sadsack…well if you take a peek in Hanger 2 at Duxford next time you visit…I think you might find that particular Mustang nestled among the other aircraft πŸ™‚

RE: N232J

Is this the Seafury that had the smoke canisters fitted to the wing tips? If it is I remember watching this in the early 90’s at Duxford.

N232J

Here’s a pic I have of N232J taken at North Weald’s Fighter Meet 89 or 90.

Yes VX653 will have a Centaurus fitted when its rebuild is complete.
It is rumoured that it will also have its arnament fitted too πŸ™‚

The RNHF Fury’s engine is currently being rebuilt as we speak.

Sadsack,

RE: So which Fury is this ?

I think Frank Sanders did the first conversion which used a former Globemaster engine (C-124) . The main reason for the use of American engines is that in some respects they are simpler than the Bristol engine plus they are easily obtainable from the ‘desert boneyards’
married to the fact that they are barely running to maximum power in a Sea Fury. The first conversion was featured in a FlyPast article circa 1983.

RE: So which Fury is this ?

I should think the TFC example will have the Centaurus fitted. The Americans have no particular grudge with the Bristol engine,it’s just easier to get hold of spares for the Wright or P&W engines when operating them in the USA.
If TFC don’t fit a Centaurus I would be rather surprised, not to mentioned rather disappointed πŸ™

RE: So which Fury is this ?

I donΒ΄t think that P&W R4360’s are fitted to many Sea Furies, the Wright R3350 Cyclone being the more common substitute for the Centaurus.
I may be wrong though ……
