Soar Meteor at Newark

In 1954/55, amid high security, FG Miles Ltd mounted a Soar engine vertically behind the cockpit of Meteor FR9 VZ608 currently in Newark Air Museum. I believe that the normal Meteor fuel system was not changed with additional tanks, which limited the sorties to about 25 minutes.

What was the purpose of this installation. As this engine was used in the “Flying Bedstead” and the Short SC1, I suspect that it was used to determine to effect of distorted airflow into the lift engines during the transition from wingborne to hovering flight.

Could anyone confirm my assumption, and advise me of the outcome of these tests
