Sobelair to file for bankruptcy by Monday. (?)

Bankruptcy threat at Sobelair.

BRUSSELS (Dutch Press Agency). The Belgian charter airline Sobelair will almost certainly file for bankruptcy next Monday. The threatened company, once part of the collapsed national airline SABENA, has still not been able to find the necessary 10 million euros it needs to survive.

Both the Flemish commercial station VTM and the radio news of public station VRT usually quite reliable reported friday night (02/01/04) that, based on anonymous sources within Sobelair, the airline is on its way to bankruptcy. Initially this would involve the sacking of all 450 employees. Part of the activities are to be taken over by competitor Birdy (operating for SNBA). Up to half the Sobelair personnel may be hired by them.

Recently the Sobelair personnel agreed with a salary reduction. The second already. This will probably not be enough to save the company though. The Belgian aviation industry is still in dulldrums after the loss of SABENA in November of 2001. Only low cost airline Ryanair is succesfull. (as well as VLM but the article does not mention them)

Surseance dreigt voor Sobelair

BRUSSEL (ANP) – De Belgische chartermaatschappij Sobelair vraagt vrijwel zeker maandag uitstel van betaling aan. Het noodlijdende bedrijf, dat ooit behoorde tot de failliete nationale luchtvaartmaatschappij van België Sabena, heeft nog altijd niet de nodige 10 miljoen euro aan nieuw kapitaal gevonden om te kunnen overleven.

Ook veel Nederlanders reizen via Brussel met Sobelair naar hun vakantiebestemming.

Zowel de Vlaamse commerciële omroep VTM als het radionieuws van de publieke zender VRT meldden vrijdagavond op grond van anonieme bronnen dat Sobelair afstevent op een surseance. Daarbij zouden in eerste instantie alle 450 werknemers worden ontslagen. Een deel van de activiteiten wordt mogelijk overgenomen door concurrent Birdy. Daar zou ook de helft van het personeel weer aan de slag kunnen.
Het personeel heeft onlangs nog ingestemd met een salarisverlaging, de tweede op rij. Maar ook dat kan het bedrijf waarschijnlijk niet redden. De Belgische luchtvaart zit nog altijd in het slop na het verlies van Sabena in november 2001. Alleen prijsvechter Ryanair, die vliegt vanuit Charleroi, boekt successen.
