Solent Sky

My last museum visit of 2004 was to the former Southampton Hall Of Aviation, now Solent Sky.
I have to say the building, from the outside, does a very good job of hiding the treasures within (but hey, at least they are all undercover! 🙂 )
I would recommend a visit to anyone passing that way, its well worth it.
A few more photo’s to follow, including some of the excellent Sandringham.

Twenty years is a long time and things change! Cannot help you there, suggest you contact member Philip Morten who is still at the Museum and will know the answer. If he doesn’t reply, PM me and I will give you another contact. Cheers.:)

I used to work there,

Any chance you remember the wind tunnel models at all ? I’d love to know what it is, now sat on the floor by the Vampire, near the “Squirt” (which is also well worth a visit)

thanks for any info you may have ?

From memory and I used to work there, you can park your bike next to the entrance which technically is not part of the pavement. Just tell them I said it was O.K.!:D

I dropped in today….

Lovely place, very helpful and only too pleased to talk to the kids and get them interested. Sat on the Sandringham flight deck, in the Swift cockpit section as well as the Skeeter.

There was an odd wind tunnel model on the floor near the Vampire I noticed as we were leaving that I didn’t have time to ask about.

Variable geometry design with fixed foward and square canards,

Some nice smaller exhibits trawled up locally, small piece of Stirling window, fantastic Mk 24 Spitfire, and a decent mexican style restaurant over the road with genuine Dos Equis to wash down the lunch.

Fathers day….not so bad really !

Just to elaborate further, yes you can park right outside the museum in the road (a one way street IIRC) in marked parking bays with “Pay at Meter” parking.

Cracking museum, you’ll enjoy it guaranteed !!!

Cheers….

I parked on a road around the corner when I went. Google maps new streetview shows the building work and parking a little further along Albert Road South. You can even read the sign that says “Pay at meter”. Just type in their postcode: SO143FR

It’s a good museum – enjoy it.

Hi not 100% sure on the Parking outside of the Museum at the moment as I know there is some building work which has closed half of the road off that the museum is on. There is a large public car park at Ocean Village just over the road from the museum and I would suggest that this is your best bet for parking.

Hope that helps

Matt

I was in Scu..sorry Southampton last Saturday with a mate and we were at a lost “to do something”. I suggested this museum but mentioned we’d only be there for about half an hour given its size. Instead we went off to Pompey, had a gander in HMS Alliance at the RN Sub Museum then off the Still&West for lunch (hmmm, Gales HSB!) followed by a bit more naval lark at the dock yard. The point being solent sky is not a solid visitor attraction in its own right.

That name is really sad.

Why change something that says it all.

I went there as a Child and always know it as Southampton Hall of avaition

Change it back please

or even ‘Solent Wings’ if you must

but thats as silly as naming the National Maritime Museum, ‘British Keels’.

OK , I have no problem with the ‘Solent’ bit , but why ‘Sky’. What is wrong with ‘Solent Aviation Museum’ or even ‘Solent Wings’ if you must.

It is about as sensible as renaming the National Maritime Museum as ‘British Sea’

It’s a great museum , but why on earth was the name changed to something as ridiculous as ‘Solent Sky’. Apart from sounding stupid , it is not at all obvious from the name that this is an aircraft museum. I fail to see how that can possibly benefit anybody.

The idea was to reflect the part the whole county of Hampshire has played in BRitish aviation history (not forgetting that The Isle of Wight was part of Hampshire until they rejigged the county boundaries in ’74)

First Post….Hiya to all

First Post…..Hiya to all..

Just a small piece of advice before travelling to this venue, check first if Southampton footy club are playing at home, as the museum is virtually next door to St Mary’s stadium.

You will be hard pushed to find parking nearby on match days.

I agree, it is an impressive museum and sadly in need of larger premises with better direction signs to get you there. Anyone know what the major snag is? Hopefully not financial.

It’s an excellent Museum I have to agree.
Sadly, I’m told that their planned move to new premises has hit a major snag.
A real shame if true, they do need a bigger building to house all their exhibits!

A terrific museum – very well laid out with so many rare aircraft that are well-looked after. You get a chance to see the interior of the Sandringham, as well, which is very impressive indeed. It’s down a minor road though and not well sign-posted so worth getting directions from tourist information if you don’t know the area.
