After four weeks of waiting I got my first solo yesterday. Our weather has been shocking of late, lots of unsettled spring winds and rain (southern hemisphere remember!!). So at the first sign of a fine day yesterday I abandoned the office and went flying. Did four circuits, went through all the emergencies, and the instructor said “how about going round once by yourself? Weather was great, a 5 knot wind right down the runway. The most nerve wracking part was sitting at the holding point for what seemed like ages waiting for two planes to land. Once I got up there I was fine – and despite a bit of float I did the best landing I had done all day! One very noticeable thing is the difference in climb rate of a C152 when there is only one person on board – I got to 500ft AGL before I knew it. And I’ve been smiling ever since…..

Thanks to all for your comments!!
I’m learning at the North Shore Aero Club in Albany, Auckland. A very friendly club and a good area to learn in.
Sadly there have been no more solo flights as they wouldn’t let me up in the strong crosswinds over the weekend!!

Congradulations Mike!! It’s funny you mentioned the difference in climb performance of the C152 with only 1 person on board. I remember thinking the same exact thing on my first solo. 😀

Very well done Mike it certainly is a great feeling! Im not sure what was better Solo or passing the final skills test allthough I do remember having to hold back the tears of joy, releif and jubilation after being told I had gained my PPL. Welcome to the elite club Pilot!
