Solo Aeros!

Hi there Guys!

Oh yes, last night I went up for my first session of aeros… on my own!

This was due to my instructor* thinking it was wise to leave me going solo in the Slingsby, to practice some of the manoeuvres we had seen on Saturday 😮

(* who happens to know maurice kirk and stayed at his house!)

Although very busy at work, I kept watching the clock and could barely contain my excitement. The clouds were scattered around 4000 feet, the sun was shinnig… and before I knew it, at about 17:45, I was strapped in, and was speaking a “G-SFTZ, ready for departure, runway 25”, before climbing to about 4500ft, to the south east of Andover.

What followed was 40 minutes of sheer pleasure and ultimate concentration. I started off with some 60 degrees steep turns for aperitif. Then a couple of wing over for amuse-bouches (and extra look out). Then it was time to dive for my first loop…

Man there’s nothing like looping! As I was going through the inverted, I was almost tempted to stay there at some point 🙂 , I was climbing for the loop and as I looked up, I saw the belly of an airliner… of course a bit higher than me but still very clear. What a feeling.

Loops were not the only thing on the menu: stall turns too. Ok, ok I still struggle with the timing on that one but climbing straight to the sky is elating… and diving to the earth, strangely even more (when you know you can pull out!).

Last, I tried a few barrel rolls for dessert. The sweet thing indeed, when well executed.

I knew it was time to head back but I could not resist the temptation to put it all together into some combination… like the aftereight with coffee one might say! Except it was more the Cuban eight!

I know this is pretty basic stuff but the grin I had on the way back was well worth it guys. I need so much practice to get these basic shapes right but I have a foot in it now and I’m not gonna let go!

Anyway, I had to share this.
Cheers,
Steph

Late post

Ok, I’m coming back by popular demand 🙂 I would hate to stall a thread approaching final

[Melvyn]
Thanks to have elaborated on Bob and Barry. I’m not sure I have a lot to add…They have so much experience that it is hard to question their skills of course. As for the pedagogy, I have to say that for both, it’s more about the “doing it” than going into theory.

In a way I was expecting some thourough briefings with more explanations about the forces and the gs, the torque effect on some manoeuvres, diagrams etc., stuff I have now read in a book… But I guess it may be better to practice the basics for real in the plane before digging the theory. I’m happy with that anyway but that’s how it’s been done so far.

I had some briefings of course but they were less “formal” than the ones for the PPL for instance.

How did your instructors have approached aeros for those who tried?

[Steve]
A stag week-end based on aeros? Apparently, if perfectly executed, it is possible to perform a barrel roll (and some others) with a full pint glass in your hand without spilling a single drop… that could be a challenge for the occasion 🙂 Anybody tried it?

[PACAIRDH]
Ah, the logarithmic spiral with the chocolate at the end, a very personal view on life indeed! I love chocolate and I find that we tend to go forward in life in a spiral way, repeating some mistake some times (rotating) but not quite the same way… And the logarithmic part is just about noticing that as you get older, time “accelerates”:

-At one year old, living a year represents living your whole life span, a long time!
-At 10, a year represents only a tenth of your whole life, still significant but shorter
-At 40, a year is only a fortieth of your life span, which is not much

So living a year at ten seems way longer than leaving a year at forty. Time accelerates… no? Not necessary a bad thing, I’m just noticing.

I think this thread may have to go around before it reaches final again. What do you think?

Come back Steph – before this thread stalls close to the ground.

This thread was always going to stall out 😀 Let’s just hope it does not crash and burn 😮 😀

But since we have started talking aerobatics, what kind of manuevers are you doing in your Chippie Janie? Is it all the leasurly kind of stuff, like barrel rolls and the odd loop, or do you do some ‘hard stuff’ as well, like stall turns (hammerheads in american language) and propper cubans etc.? I would like to know, ’cause there is a Chippie on the island that I’ve been dying to get my hands on for some years now, and if I get my hands on it I would like to ‘try’ it propperly. Unfourtunatly it has not flown for approx. seven years now, because the owner is afraid of it! He nearly killed himself in another Chippie about 20 years ago when he stalled and spun in on an approach. He is still maintaining the otherone in airworthy condition, but never flies it.

A stag aerobatics course! A few bevvies and you will at least feel like you are doing inverted spins.

Come back Steph – before this thread stalls close to the ground.

Depends on whether I can disguise it as a stag weekend. 😉

Now I just need to convince SWMBO to let me syphon off some of the wedding fund to get myself an aerobatics course…

Steve, aren’t we being a little optimistic here? Do you REALLY think that’s going to happen? 😮

yeh well done.

I dont like doing my own stall turns – but loops and Barrel rolls are amazing.
What ive always wanted to do is link them up like an airdisplay, but i dont think thats gonna happen.

I’m curious as to how they differed – that is, if you are able to say on the forum. I always find the differences in opinion as to how to fly very interesting.

It is not usually a case of right and wrong, just understanding why differerent people chose different methods.

The differences between Barry and Bob are not that distinct except that Barry swears more and Bob loves Margaret Thatcher!

As for flying, both are good instructors. Both will let you make the mistake and put it right and will only jump in if you are bing stupid. Barry will not say much.

With all due respect to Bob I have to say I have a real soft spot for Barry as he did about half of my training and makes me laugh a lot. I haven’t flown with Bob as much. I have played guitar behind his partner’s daughter.

Offline I may tell you stories about both of them (none of which would be at all negative) including the one about how Barry once uttered a total of two words in a lesson with the late Ron Eastman (Auster rebuilder and BAFTA winning cameraman). Ron was another character. It must be late. . . .

….logarithmic spiral with a little piece of chocolate at the end..
don’t know about that but..

watch out that there isn’t a spectacular firework in the middle!
Great stuff, better than a first solo!

Fly safe and enjoy all 4 dimensions 😀

Excellent Steph, sounds very exciting, not sure my stomach would take too kindly to it though, keep us informed how it goes

Melvyn,

I trained with Barry for the very first session, before he had to stop for a while, then carried on with Bob Cole. Different styles but really enjoyable anyway…

Though I get the usual French-bashing thing from Bob or Pete every time I see them. Not really harmful but they think they’re funny… Ah, it’s now been a few years and I learnt to ignore the comments and just smile back. In the end it’s all in good spirit. So I hope.

Anyway last night they could have said anything, I was on a high and nothing could touch me!

DME,

I did about 4 sessions before December with the instructor and was then cleared to practice the basic shapes on my own. Unfortunately because of the weather and other factors, I could never make that solo session happen. 2 weeks ago I got checked out on the Slingsby again (I usually fly the C172), then went on my own for some locals to get used to the aircraft again and last Saturday, we went for the first aeros session with the instructor since December.

Apparently some of it had sunk in me as he said he was happy for me to practice the basics on my own.

How much dual training did you have?

Well done Steph, did you train with Barry or Bob Cole? I was going to do that ages ago but the Rearwin got in the way and all my money went there!

I am jealous.
