Of the shots above I would say that most of them are official shots, yes; the first Scimitar pic could only be taken by an official phot. The Sopwith Tabloid dates from prior to 1916 (when they were nearly all deleted from service) so I’d imagine it was probably a Navy phot who took the picture. The Sea Balliol looks like its been cut from a magazine or pamphlet – note the number beneath – and the second Scimitar pic is definately taken from a period magazine (see the criss-cross effect – it was printed on paper).
The Firefly. Hmm – seen that pic so many times so its not like it is exclusive to anyone; and like the Scimitar air-to-air it could only be taken by a service phot.

What do you mean by patches? Cloth badges? Guess Brunswick is the keyword here.
Be interesting to see them, especially as there is no naval air squadron mentioned in Ray Sturtivants Squadrons of the Fleet Air Arm with the number 1854…

Flood,

Would you say that most of these pics that I have are then PR stuff most of them have either For Official Crown use stamp on them.

The Firefly doesn’t thou, still going thru the boxs have come across some interesting pilot notes that I will try to scane.

Also in one of the boxs was a complete set of patchs for 1853 and 1854 Squadron so I tickle to find them.

These are all Fleet Air Arm aircraft – Scimitar, Sea Balliol, Firefly (drone), not sure about number 4 but is it a Sopwith Tabloid?

Stuff me Nerm – you did learn something! It is a Sopwith Tabloid – its the nose that is the give away, apparently. The Schneider was without the holes in the cowling.
Will – thats the only picture that ever seems to turn up of unpiloted Fireflys; I would also like to see any others that might be out there…

It was intended to be launched from a submarine.

The Scimitar flypast looks awfully like Farnborough to me.

I think that is Steve Patterson flying the U Mk 8/9 Firefly 590. 🙂
Mark

Oh don’t start him off on that one again Mark.
I only had the temerity to mention the F-word to him once and I got an hour long lecture on why slow ‘airplanes’ are undesirable.

This time it’ll be your fault. 🙂 🙂 😉 😉 🙂 🙂
