Some Interesting Telly…

I’ve been thumbing through the terrestrial Tv guide for this week and have found a few programmes which might be worth watching…

Monday November 3rd,8pm,CH5 “Building the Ultimate…:Helicopters”: A half hour documentary on the design and development of helicopters, from early experiments to the present day. It’s on Ch5 and it’s only half an hour long, but might be worth a look.
Also at the same time on Channel 4 is ‘Speed Machines’,focusing on the development of racing cars in the 20’s and 30’s.Alot of folks who like classic planes like classic racing cars,so it’s worth mentioning for that reason alone, but some of the developments in motor racing (most notably superchargers) were later put to good use in aviation.Something to look out for if the eggbeater thing on 5 turns out pants…

Tuesday Novermber 4th,BBC2,9pm “Victoria Cross:For Valour”: An hour long documentary on the history of the Victoria Cross and it’s recipients over the years,in particular Major Robert Cain for his actions at Arnhem.Sounds good, although it’s presented and narrated by Jeremy Clarkson,so who knows!

Wednesday November 5th,Ch5,7:30pm “Heroes of World War Two-The Pathfinders”: Self explanitory title really-a half hour documentary on RAF Bomber Command’s Pathfinders. These half-hour Ch5 docu’s tend to feel a bit rushed, but might have some worthwhile substance to it.

Thursday November 6th,Channel 4,9pm “The Queen’s Lost Uncle”: Hour-long documentary examining the life and death of Prince George,Duke of Kent, who joined the RAF in WW2 and was killed in a flying accident in Scotland in 1942.The documentary is said to be controversial,so quite what it’ll be like I’ve no idea. Alternatively,on Ch5 at the same time there’s “Escape to Victory”, the movie about a team of Allied POW’s playing an international game of footie against the German national team.Stars Micheal Caine,Pele,John Wark and Ozzi Ardiles…oh and Sylvester Stallone as a Canadian goalkeeper (!).Take your pick…

Cain is Jezza’s father in law, and he writes a very good piece about all this in the current Radio Times; he points out that these days, people call muppets like Beckham a hero just for scoring a goal in stupid football; he says he’s proud to be related to a REAL hero.

Good on him, I say.

I didn’t realise he was related, although I saw most of the programme. (Did I blink and miss that information or did he only mention it in the paper?!) I thought the programme was well done though, particularly for the background about the medal itself, most of which I was unaware of. The deeds of the men were of course outstanding and my hat is taken off to them all.

I am so glad to hear of someone in the media trashing the football craziness! Wish more people would do the same… Football players are overrated and overpaid hairdresser models and nothing more, in my book. But that’s probably the subject of another rant.

Ahhh no,I know the one you’re thinking of though. That was ‘Robbie Coltrane’s Planes,Trains and Automobiles’,which was first screened about 6 or 7 years ago now,but still gets aired on digital, cable etc.Think some of the filming they did for the programme was the best footage we’ll see of Black 6 in action.
Them were the days,lad…

Hi Lancman,
I agree with you about the Brunel programme that Clarkson did,but I find he tends to be a bit unpredictable,so you never know what angle he’s going to come at something from.Sounds very promising judging by what you say about his RT piece. 🙂

I’ve started to give up on the half hour slot Channel 5 ‘documentaries; by the time you’ve had three ad breaks, you get about 20 mins of actual program!

Although the controversy might also be that the Sunderland that he was travelling in was deliberately crashed… That seems to get hauled out every time his death is mentioned so maybe they have a new and inexperienced researcher in the office – they’ll be bring out progs claiming that Kennedy was assasinated by more than one sniper next!

You’re quite right Ian,he’s said to have been a gay or bisexual crossdresser and a lover of Noel Coward.

If anything I would hazard a guess that they are going to suggest that he was gay. Can I say that on this forum or is it men in uncomfortable shoes????

I recall a programme several months ago that reckoned he was that way inclined, but can’t remember who the prominent fellow was, that had an alleged affair with him.
