Before I even start with tread pleas no flaming, no nonsense posts and please let’s keeps it civilised and let’s have some mature discussion, and by god let’s not start discussion about number of downed aircrafts over Serbian back in 1999.
Anyway, I have come across following article …….
“Waldman said Serbian forces were lying in wait as his F-16 fighter jet crossed into Yugoslavia. Loud beeps that rang through the cramped cockpit warned that the radar beams from two anti-aircraft missiles had locked onto his plane.”
“I looked over my shoulder and saw the missiles getting closer and closer,” Waldman said. When he heard the word “magnum” shouted over the radio, it announced that Pigpen had launched HARM anti-radiation missiles that neutralized the Serbian threat.
“I saw those missiles explode about 1,000 feet from my plane, and I thought how comforting it was to know that my wingman was there to check my ‘six,’ my vulnerable spot,” Waldman said.”
I find this very intresting 1000 feet is about 300m …..first I am not sure that proximity fuse will detonate warhead so far from aircraft , so question is why did they explode prematurley .
Is there any defence mechanisam , an ECM , that can do that……or missls where detonated remotley from ground …but why?
Also that made me think following ……if such ECM exisit , could that explain why Yugoslav Air Defence claimed high number of destroyed/damaged aircrafts ….they noted explosion and asumed it must be at least damaged.
